I'm rather sorry that you're most excited about space monkeys.

Casting Rumours For Kirk, Scotty, & Formerly Spock

By Michelle

Could a Poseidon star and a Stargate Atlantis actor be the front-runners to play Kirk and Scotty in the upcoming Star Trek film?
The IESB is claiming that Mike Vogel is director J.J. Abrams' top choice to play James T. Kirk, taking over the role made famous by William Shatner. "We have been able to talk with two other studio insiders who have also confirmed that he is indeed the fore runner for the coveted role," the site stated after trying unsuccessfully to get a comment from Paramount or Vogel's agent. In addition to Poseidon, the actor appeared in the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Meanwhile, TrekMovie.com reports that Paul McGillion - a popular actor from Stargate Atlantis whose fans lobbied to return his character to that science fiction franchise after being written out during the past season - has auditioned to play Scotty, joining a list of hopefuls already said to include Martin Compston, Greg Hemphill and James McAvoy. "Obviously it would be a great honour to follow in James Doohan's footsteps," said the Scottish-born actor, who currently lives in Doohan's home country, Canada.
And although the role of young Spock has been cast with Zachary Quinto taking over from Leonard Nimoy, Adrien Brody is now revealing that he did speak to Abrams about the role. MTV Movies Blog quoted Brody as saying, "I did talk to J.J. ...that would have been cool. I told my parents. They got a kick out of it. 'I may be Spock!' Oh, well." He joked that he should have tried the Vulcan salute to convince Abrams to give him the role.
Meanwhile, original Sulu George Takei hinted not only that his character may return on Heroes following a season premiere shocker, but suggested as well that he might turn up in the Star Trek film. "I wouldn't be too surprised if I am," he said to Entertainment Weekly. As for his other gig, "Nothing is what it seems on the surface of Heroes...chortle."

Interview - Orci Talks Casting, Characters, Canon…and Kirks
I'm not going to quote it here because it's kinda long, but there's some interesting stuff there, even if I still feel about the same way about this movie, which is pretty reserved.

Re: Zachary Quinto as Spock in Trek XI
I ask one thing of this movie, and one thing only. I ask for a canon repair of the abomination. Better yet, a canon repudiation of the abomination. If they do that I will not only watch it, I will buy the DVD and give copies away for Christmas.

Re: Zachary Quinto as Spock in Trek XI
Doubt it'll happen. If ENT gets any recognition it'll probably just be a lame name drop, even if the writer claims it's going to be better than what they did in NEM.

I'd settle for Spock briefly mentioning the first Vulcan/Human relationship and kids, naming TnT.
Doubt that'll happen though...

You know, it'd be really cool if TPoptarts was in this movie, even as a redshirt whose only task was to die convincingly.

Eric Bana Cast As Bad Guy Nero In New 'Trek' Film
Chris Pine May Be New Kirk
He actually kinda looks the part.

Paramount Pictures today officially announced Eric Bana will be playing the role of bad guy "Nero" in the new Star Trek film.
Previous rumors had suggested director J.J. Abrams wanted to cast Russel Crowe or Karl Urban as the film's main villain, but by casting Bana his goal of casting a big-name actor for the role seems to have been fulfilled. Bana had starring roles in blockbusters such as Hulk, Troy and Munich, and will next year appear opposite Natalie Portman Scarlett Johansson in The Other Boleyn Girl.
Beyond the name of Nero for Bana's character, no other details on the film's main villain were revealed. In fact, the Hollywood Reporter noted today that shrouded in so much secrecy, that many of the film's roles were in fact offered to actors without even offering them a script to read. Abrams apparently worked the same way for his upcoming monster movie Cloverfield.
Eric Bana was born in Australia 39 years ago as Eric Banadinovich. After building his career on the Australian sketch comedy show Full Frontal and spending a decade making acclaimed Australian movies, Bana moved over to the US when director Ridley Scott cast him in Black Hawk Down. In this film, he appeared opposite Tom Hardy, who played Shinzon on Star Trek: Nemesis.

Chris Pine May Be New Kirk
October 9, 2007
by Anthony Pascale , Filed under: ST08 Cast , trackback
This is the big one folks — 27 year-old actor Chris Pine is in talks to play James T. Kirk in the new Star Trek movie. TrekMovie.com was tipped off on the Pine talks earlier, but before it could be confirmed the story showed up at the Hollywood Reporter (which is pretty good confirmation). Pine is a relative unknown, but right now a bit of a hot commodity in Hollywood. In fact the actor is mulling over two roles (playing Kirk and a part in a new Joe Carnahan / George Clooney film) with negotiations focusing on the overlapping shooting schedules. Pine may have to choose one over the other and if he picks Clooney over Kirk, Paramount and Abrams are reported to have a number of backup options.
Pine first appeared in 2003 with some TV guest spots on shows like ER and CSI: Miami. His film debut was in the 2004 chick flick Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement and he has appeared in four other films since. According to the Hollywood Reporter, it was his ’scene stealing’ role as a neo-nazi assassin in the 2007 action film Smokin Aces that has caught the attention of producers and casting agents. Pine comes from an acting family with two grandparents, both parents and a sister in the business. His father Robert Pine appeared Star Trek Voyager (Liria in "The Chute") and Star Trek Enterprise (Tavin in "Fusion"). If Pine ends up taking Trek over the Joe Carnahan film, it will be the second time that director J.J. Abrams has nabbed something away from Carnahan. In 2005 Abrams was brought in to replace Carnahan on Mission: Impossible: III…something that Carnahan did not take well.
He actually kinda looks the part.

Scotty has been cast. Simon Pegg
I hate this casting.
Don't get me wrong: I love Pegg. He was hysterical in both Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, but Scotty? Come on.
Up until this point, I've liked the casting, even if I doubt I'll see this movie in the theater, but Pegg as Scotty is just ridiculous.
Paramount Pictures is beaming up Simon Pegg to play Scotty in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek."
Pegg joins Eric Bana, Anton Yelchin, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Leonard Nimoy in the latest bigscreen incarnation of the classic TV series.
Penned by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the story chronicles the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members during their time at Starfleet Academy. Chris Pine has been offered the role of Kirk.
Paramount has set a November start date for the film, which will bow on Christmas Day 2008.
Abrams and Stratton Leopold are producing, while Kurtzman and Orci will exec produce alongside Bryan Burk and Damon Lindelof.
Pegg, whose recent credits include "Hot Fuzz," will star in the upcoming satire "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People."
