Exactly, and there's also the weird case when a name is just too close in pronunciation to an insult in another language and you have to alter it for obvious reasons. But most of the time, it's only to make pronunciation easier for people that some names are altered.

Remember the part where T'Pol tells Trip that she has mind melded with him making him sabotage the ship? Well, in the original version it goes like this:

T'POL: I compelled you to sabotage the power grid. After you completed the assignment, we melded again. I altered your memory of what had happened.

But in the Spanish dubbing what she says is:

T'POL: And I compelled you to sabotage the power grid. [OK, everything all right till now.] When all of this ends maybe we could have another [sexual] encounter [And I thought "Wha'?"] I will alter your memory about what had happened [doble "Wha'?"]

I mean, somebody is really romantic or really weird in the dubbing crew :) I don't know if people who has watched the show in other languages have witnessed anything alike.

Anyone else getting evil fanfic ideas from reading this? I'm getting some very evil ones...

I guess that makes sense, but I just always considered 'Klingon' to be something that almost sounded German anyway, so when I think of changing a name I think more of, say, China, where the language is nothing like English. But for some reason I can picture Germans saying "der Klingon" really easily. Although, if it's close to an insult... innnnnteresting... that could be a fun one-shot story, something like along those lines.

I think I've read somewhere that the name Putin sounds an awful lot like a bad word for whore or something in certain languages in southern Europe (can't remember which languages).

*Raises hand* That would be in French. Whore= putain in French but the name Putin isn't pronounced the same way, for which I'm grateful because it saved us from many, many bad jokes.

In Italian it's "Puttana", and this term is bad.
Anyway, far from Putin (I think. :? )
Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to

Something like Enterprise meets a new species and when they're talking with their Embassador Trip sneezes and the Embassador gets angry and threatens with a interplanetary war because he thinks Trip has insulted her mother?

Yeah, you can make the joke "son of Putin".

By the way, Kevin Thomas Riley, I love your "vote Palpatine" banner. It's great!

 They can't keep the name the same for an invented species? Actually, that sounds like something the French language purity board would do...

No no Klingon ne, the ne is like a s in English (to multiply) so the specie is called Klingon and Klingons is called Klingonne and the Klingon did sounded nice in German. They played also a scene at a Enterprise brigde (die Brucke) and I really had to smile when they started something like Rote Gefahr (red alert!) My German is a bit rusty as you can see :D

Actually, we like to put as many words with a g in a sentence and just starting to speak Dutch with a lot of gutteral sounds, just to scare people :D
And you are absolutly right about changing names and how to adress people when you are in a different country. Makes communication easier and it is also fun!
