I studied Afrikaans a while back for a trip to South Africa. I was told it was similar to 17th century Dutch. Talk about gutteral! Just saying good morning gave me a sore throat.

Any language have its own beauties and its own unattractiveness.
English language, for example, is musical and sweet, but it sounds like peoples were gnawing chewing-gum. :D
Who knows how it's my native language to your ears! :doubt:
Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four

And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

The Emperor Carlos I (V in Germany) used to say:

French to love,
Italian to sing,
Spanish to pray,
and German to talk with my horse.

Italian sound very cheerful for somebody who doesn't talk it.

LOL. That all sounds pretty apropos to me. And I agree about the Italian. It's got such pizazz!

I think English is useful because it's absorbed so many cognates from other languages -- you get a lot of synonyms and shades of meaning to play with. The grammar is much easier than German, and you don't have to remember whether a word is masculine or feminine like you do in the romance languages. However, our spelling is totally screwed up.

Dutch may have some ugly sounds, but it has a nice cadence (rythum).

To me Dutch sounds like a mix of English, German and Scandinavian.

That's probably what it is.

Except that a lot of English would be derived from Dutch, not the other way round. When I hear Dutch I'm always thinking I'm *this* close to understanding it (even though I'm not).

Remember the part where T'Pol tells Trip that she has mind melded with him making him sabotage the ship? Well, in the original version it goes like this:

T'POL: I compelled you to sabotage the power grid. After you completed the assignment, we melded again. I altered your memory of what had happened.

But in the Spanish dubbing what she says is:

T'POL: And I compelled you to sabotage the power grid. [OK, everything all right till now.] When all of this ends maybe we could have another [sexual] encounter [And I thought "Wha'?"] I will alter your memory about what had happened [doble "Wha'?"]

I mean, somebody is really romantic or really weird in the dubbing crew :) I don't know if people who has watched the show in other languages have witnessed anything alike.

And some beautiful songs too... One of the most famous Dutch bands (aka the Dutch Beatles, including screaming teenagers) used reggae for their songs and my favorite band is singing the blues in Dutch..

Dutch people do have some Viking blood in their veins, we are a mixure of all kinds of groeps. We also have a lot of French words (thanks to Napoleon) and Hebrew words in our language. We addept a lot of 'foreign" words in our language and make it our own. And English, German and Scandinavian (except Finnish, that a very unique language) - if I got it right - all coming form the same root (the German language group).
BTW Kevin, I looked at your TPol calender, liked most of it. The picture of TPol in the blue suit in July was very nice, can you tell me from which epsiode you have take that picture?

Italian songs remind me of nice, warm summers, the ultimate summer feeling.
French songs remind me of Paris, Spanisch songs of Barcelona, English songs of TnT and I like to sing with all this songs (but according to my nice colleages at the office I can not sing :D, so I sing very quitely)

Thanks! :) But I didn't make the whole calendar myself. But I did do July, and that pic you mention is a publicity photo from North Star. Here is the original (click on it to see it):
