Well I'm sure they were always considered very useful at home.
My grandfather ran off to join the Royal Navy when he was 16. In WWI his ship was captured by Germans and then, when the German ship came under attack (and was eventually sunk), the British prisoners were put off in life boats as long as they signed a pledge not to fight Germany anymore (which they all ignored). When WWII came along he joined the American merchant marines and captained a merchant ship that went on convoys to Murmansk where ships were torpedoed and sunk all around him. It all sounds so daring and romantic and exciting!
But in between ... he operated a gas station.
