I loved being pregnant. People carried things and opened doors and asked me how I was feeling. I was in med school for the first one, residency for the second one, and private practice for the third. By the end of each pregnancy, I had a clearly visible excuse to stop and rest, could eat anything I wanted, and took naps at odd hours without anyone griping about how lazy I was. Thank God I never got sick. It was a good thing, since I was in Gross Anatomy dissecting a cadaver for the first one and still doing minor surgery up until my due date with the other two. I did draw the line at circumcisions, though. After breaking down in tears a couple of times at 5 months pregnant trying to do them, I figured out that I just wasn't wired to cut things off little babies while I was pregnant. :?

About the nutty pregnant crying: I can clearly remember that one time when I was pregant I was talking to my husband about something totally innocuous and in the middle of talking I burst into tears for no reason. So I am crying helplessly and telling him, "I'm sorry, this is so weird. I don't even know why I'm crying. I don't EVEN FEEL SAD." I can so clearly remember that weird moment.

The second most nutty pregnant crying instance was one time my husband was going out shopping and said he needed underwear and I said, "Oh get the colored underwear" and he said "No, I like the white underwear." When he gets back I look in the bag and he had gotten colored underwear. I burst into tears. I was SO TOUCHED! At the same time, I was able to see myself objectively and go, "This is nuts!"

And it wasn't just while I was pregnant, either! I clearly remember trimming my newborn son's fingernails in the hospital and nicking him with the scissors and just bawling my eyes out because I'd made him bleed. Since this was only a couple of hours after his father had done a circumcision on him, I'm guessing that my husband didn't have the same problem.

Thing is.....we have been trying for a long time.

And I feel so horrible now that I actually feel bad for feeling miserable.

I mean.....I'm suppose to enjoy this....I wanted it!

:?

I actually thought about picking up a book called "Pregnancy sucks" the other day.

How horrible is that! :O

Oh hell, who needs to be pregnant to cry? I cry during The ABC Nightly News with Charles Gibson and not even just because the news is sad. Those damned persons of the week can really make me bawl. Show me a teacher doing good things in a classroom and I lose it. When I was pregnant it was only slightly worse than usual. Gallo wine commercials used to make me cry. Small town parades make me cry. Sunday night we went to see Jay Unger and Molly Mason (he wrote the gorgeous Ashoken Farewell fiddle tune that was used in Ken Burns' Civil War series) and I quietly cried through half the freaking concert because it was just so lovely.

I'm really hoping this condition dries up when my uterus does. I think I act kind of mean sometimes because I'm trying not to get so emotionally involved I start blubbering in public. I'd really like to be a nice, level-headed, emotionally predictable old hag.

Husband : Gosh, you are snappish, you must be pregnant

Me (very irritated): I AM NOT SNAPPISCH!!

Husband : Snappisch, snappish, tired, emotional and feeling sick. Shall I fry chicken and give you coffee in the morning, just to prove that you are pregnant?

When I read the poetic prose of MissAnnThropic (Trip and T'Pol on the emotional rollercoaster), I think I'm an old hag already.

T'Sara, shame on your husband for asking for dinner!!!! gggrrrr!!!! But don't kick him out just yet. He may still be useful for something . . . like baby # 2. Hang in there. It will all be worth it!

Panyasan, what is your signature from? It sounds so mournful!

I know many lovely old hags. Yes, they are plainspoken -- I think women after 40 get more and more plainspoken -- but I doubt many charities or civic organizations in this town would exist without them. Their energy and good works amaze me. Course a few of them are just nasty old shrews on power trips that I wouldn't want to have to share a room in a nursing home with, but we won't get into that...

Really? That was not my intention. First I wanted to write a little story as my signature, just to explain the text, but that was too much text.
Picture this. Spring in the 11th century. A young clerc is working at the office, carefully copying the Latin text before him. He is sharpening his pencil. Through the open window he hears a women sing, she is walking by. She is singing a popalar Spanish song. It reminds him of her. And he writes the first sentence down in Latin. And then he makes a translation in his own language, not knowing that centuries later scolars will exam his text and declare it the first ever written text in Dutch. So he wrote in latin and middle age Dutch Alle the birds has started to build nests, except you and me. What are we waiting for. He would ask her tonight.

(In the middle ages all texts were written in Latin and French was the lanquage of noble men. The language of the people, like English, German and Dutch were more spoken language then written language).
I always though it was pretty amusing to see that people of all centuries are the same, that a young man form the 11th century has the same feelings then some one from let say 22th.
Like it amuses me that monks in the middle ages wrote down things like 'my hands are freezing', when they were copying Latin texts.
Sorry, history nerd.... :D

Well, that would amuse me too. Okay, I guess it wasn't mournful at all. Just sweet. Except that he's a monk, isn't he? So maybe it is a little mournful? Or were those just 11th century monks just younger sons getting up to everything?

A friend of mine just got back from a tour of Greece. She said they stopped at a convent where the nuns sold a number of the party embroidered wares they said they had sewn themselves. Then the group went on to an island and discovered the exact same items, clearly mass-produced. They were all SO shocked that nuns would lie. :)

First of all, congratz to both expecting moms.

About the expenses, over here the government automatically takes 9% of your paycheck for "social inssurance" (CCSS for us locals). That's suppossed to cover you for anything, from a cold to tooth ache to major surgery unless it is for aesthetic purposes, and a portion of that goes to your pension, which is basically the check you'll collect when you retire. When I'm abroad, my credit card includes this insurance that should cover up to half a million dollars in hospital expenses and surgeries and all those messy thing, but I'm hoping not to use that EVER.

And about the unexpected emotional flare-ups, erm, I know women who have those without being pregnant. During pregnancy, it is completely normal and allowed and really understandable. So, do it while you can and enjoy it.

The labour spew is something else no?

Normally, it's all "oh NO I feel like I might be QUEASY! MERCY ME!"

But when you're in labour, you're just like "scream, pant, scream, puke, pant scream, puke"

Y'know, it's a little more visceral than your normal day.
