Here's something typical from my neck of the woods. This is a photo my dad took with his telephoto lens from the front porch of his camp near Pecan Island, LA. Now you know why we don't let small dogs and toddlers run loose out there.

Something typical: we have this car show thingy outside like once a year.

Don't worry, T'Poptarts, that photo's not typical for my parents' camp anymore. Shortly after the photo was taken, Dad took the Wildlife and Fisheries hunting permits he'd collected and used them, and now we all have alligator belts, purses and boots. And now it's much safer for my kids and nephews to go fishing out there. Since then, a few more gators have moved in again, but none of them are as big as these guys were. Dad was afraid they'd eat my brother's labrador puppy, or maybe even one of my brother's boys, since my brother's four hooligans lack caution and good sense and if left unsupervised would have walked right up to the gators to poke 'em with a stick.

Oh, alligator boots. One of the few things those creatures are good for. I am very fond of boots generally. The cute kind with heels. What do you do, drag the carcasses somewhere and pay the people to give them back as belts, boots, and purses? Or do they keep most of the gator leather instead of money?

I wouldn't count on it, T'Poptarts. My dad has some framed photos of the boys each holding baby alligators about a foot long... just big enough take off a finger.

They have no fear at all, and he encourages it. Says it teaches them to handle wildlife safely.

Yeah. Tell that to poor Steve Irwin.

And JzK, what Dad did was skin the animals and send the skin to a tannery, then bring the tanned skins to a custom leatherwork shop and to a fellow who makes handmade boots in Texas. They weren't cheap, but boy are they pretty! I didn't get any, though. I just got a belt. It's a nice one, though. And that way he got to keep the meat. Alligator tail is yummy.

Here's a less scary pic for those of you disturbed by the gators. My Dad loves to take nature photos. This was also at his camp. And no... he didn't shoot this one after the photo. It wasn't hunting season yet.

You know, things like that make me glad that I live in North Dakota, if nothing else for the simple fact that there aren't as many things up here that can kill you.

Deer are such graceful creatures. Yummy, too, but I can only eat them when I've not seen them alive. Ours at home are bigger than yours, I think:

It's all relative. No alligators in New England, thank goodness. We have moose at home - lots in the northern part of the state. Moose will certainly not eat you for dinner, but they are easily the most fatal kind of single-car crash. A moose is at just the wrong height that its 800+ lb. body crashes through your windshield and crushes you.

There's always something that can kill you.
