Price of gasoline
Hi everyone:
Hope this topic won't be too depressing but I was watching CNBC, business news channel on cable. They had a quick flash of the price of gasoline in various countries on screen today.
I wondered, how much are you paying for a gallon of gasoline where you live? It doesn't have to be counted gallon, if you pay by liter, then either convert to gallon or just give the price by liter.
I live in the Washington, D.C. area, the highest I've seen in my area is $3.76 per gallon. In my immediate neighborhood, it is $3.60 per gallon. That is a big difference. This is for regular unleaded.

Around $3.50 per gallon. I'm actually considering not mowing the lawn at all this summer, which I'm sure will make the hippies who are for hiking gas prices happy ... just like the fact that food prices are also going to go up because all those tractors have to run on something, after all.

Re: Price of gasoline
It ain't so much the tractors as the impact of all that ethanol made from corn. That and the cost of getting everything where it needs to go since we seldom seem to buy stuff locally made or produced anymore.
Gas around here is $3.76 - $3.86 for the cheapest grade. The others are already over $4.
But the Europeans among us are probably laughing at our whining when our petrol is so cheap.

Re: Price of gasoline
I saw petrol yesterday at $AU 1.40 a liter which is, provided I have done my conversion and exchange rate correctly, almost exactly $US 5 a gallon. However, I'm afraid to drive on the other side of the road with the crazy drivers around here (the way I learned to drive, and I only got my license in July, it's considered important to stay in your own lane when going around a curve). So I take the bus a lot, and walk, and give people petrol money for rides.

Re: Price of gasoline
It's currently $3.59/gallon here (I must be near BnB?
)
We have this neat service up in Jeff City where like the local gas company, MFA Oil, provides the middle level gasoline, like Unleaded Plus, for the same price as standard unleaded, because the middle level is like from domestic oil, Alaskan, or somethin. So it's like a way to promote domestic petroleum use. I get it any time I'm there b/c it's the same price, domestic, and better for your vehicle anyway. But they don't do it here in Rolla
I'm pretty sure we're all gonna be really shocked by gas prices soon because oil has been rising SO FAST per barrel that I don't think the user end price has even been able to react to it. I'm really freaked by how high it's gonna go but I'm bettin it's gonna be bad. It might actually be lucky for me that I'll be in training this summer and not driving anywhere. Hopefully it crests this summer and starts to come down SOME time.

Re: Price of gasoline
Last time I filled up it was 3.86. I take the bus to work, so I have not felt the pinch too much yet. Except for buying food. And the next time I buy a three-month bus pass, I will probably be in shock. I better start saving now for the two trips from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Rochester, New York for family weddings. Why oh why did my niece and nephew decide to have their weddings the same summer and eight weeks apart?
Harassment of relatives, pure and simple! Maybe I should get them both gas cards for wedding presents so I can say, "well I DID get you a present, but I used it up on the way out here".

Working on a major fan fic project. Two-thirds done. Hope to put it up in the not TOO distant future.

Hopefully they start designing affordable, reliable cars that use renewable energy sources so we can stop this absurdity altogether!

Well in the states you can already get a dozen different hybrids, even hybrid SUVs, and most new cars run on E-85 but supposedly you get worse mileage on it.
Plus the Honda FCX Clarity is available but in VERY limited areas because it's a 100% hydrogen fuel cell vehicle and hydrogen stations aren't exactly plentiful. But this may be the future of zero emission, renewable resource driven cars. Has pretty impressive features that people shouldn't balk at like we did the first hybrids that only did 45 mph.
Their new engine is capable of producing 100 kW... which I ran into a calculator and got equivalent to 134 HP. To any muscle car jocks that might sound pitiful but most compacts are like in the 90-120 area. I think the supped up version of my car, the Nissan 200SX SE-R (which is also similar to an Escort GT or a Ford Probe) is like 142 hp, so it's comparable to that.

Re: Price of gasoline
There are diesels that get better milage than hybrids and still cost less, so why drive a hybrid when you can drive a BMW?
I don't even want to think of corn ethanol.
As for gas, ironically my pickup's engine can pretty much only take the regular stuff. I always used to take the mid-grade stuff because it was cheaper, but last summer my pickup had trouble running, and as it turned out, the fuel was vaporizing before it got to my carburetor.

Re: Price of gasoline
Diesel gets better mileage but around here it's a dollar more expensive than regular gas. I don't know how that works out in the end but it sure looks painful.

Re: Price of gasoline
Homnemade diesel is cheaper to produce than homemade ethanol. You can make diesel out of almost anything organic. Corn, soybeans, garbage, grass clippings, cooking oil, etc. You can even make it out of sewage.

Just filled-up this morning:
$1.35... per liter!
For you antiquated imperialists, that's $5.28 a US Gallon!
... or in other words: way too much
