Ha - I saw this thread and thought, "Elessar has news guns..."

And I was right.

To answer bnb's question, or try to, I myself am not sure I'd want a weapon of destruction named after me.

My sister didn't like firearms either. As each of my nieces matured and reached age 21 they approached me to teach them about "guns". I did and stressed safety, explained how each worked. Took several apart and explained what each piece did. Explained the contents of nullets and shotgun shells. Finally took them to the range.

I started each one off with an Anschutz target rifle. Nine pounds of rifle and a tiny .22 LR cartridge that made little noise and generated minimal recoil when it was fired. Usual reaction was "Is that all?" I workd with them until they could put together a sub half inch group of 5 shots at 100 yards off a bench. This is with aperture sights. They worked their way up to a 458 WinMag.

All three learned well over a several month period. Each can shoot better than their husbands with anything from a .22 to a 12 ga. Yeah, I taught them trap and skeet also. :-)

Women make better shooting students in my experience than guys. They actually listen and do what you tell them. Most of the guys think they know it all and rarely listen, which their scores reflect. I am amazed at how many young guys will hold a pistol sideways when ahooting at a 25 yard target.

They get that from those stupid cop shows. Gang bangers are shown doing it that way while they strut and posture.

That's pretty impressive progress for those girls. When I get to TBS, I'm hoping to be able to wipe out all of the BAD habits I've developed trying to learn on my own.

I imagine the recoil on a 458 win being pretty strong. The only two big cartridges I've fired are .300 winmag and 7.62x54R. They seemed similar, but I didn't fire em the same day.

I actually tried (not the first time) shooting sideways like that to try and get an idea of why anyone would shoot that way. Interestingly, it changes the way the recoil moves the weapon. Obviously, it's not a great idea for shooting at distance, but you don't get the same kind of muzzle climb... you sorta get horizontal muzzle drift.

Meaning more chance of hitting an innocent bystander. Which gang bangers are famous for. One thing that these crispies and blooddsses and so forth are famous for is the plain fact that they can't shoot straight. They come roaring past with their guns and strafe a target. They might or might not come anywhere close. Fact is, they are more likely to hit a child playing in the street, or an old man walking his dog, than they are to hit a rival gang member.

WELL not if you have a Kel-Tec 9mm or an automatic Glock 18 with a 32 round magazine :D

Because a gun can be used to kill. That's what it's made to do. And even kill people. So I don't want an instrument of death named after me. It'd be creepy.

What if he was a valiant knight in shining armor on a rampant charger? And he wanted to name his shining sword after you? Would that still be creepy?

I find that most young men need to learn from their own mistakes. Sometimes it can even be humorous. Take for instance, the teenager at scout camp taking his shotgun merit badge. These are only 20 gauge, single-shot shotguns we're talking about here, so if you hold them right, it shouldn't be anywhere near enough to hurt you or knock you back. Anyway, this kid clearly wasn't holding it right - he was holding it away from his shoulder. Frankly, it didn't look all that comfortable anyway, so I have no idea why he insisted on holding it that way. The instructor warned him before he launched the skeet, but the kid insisted that he knew what he was doing. Everyone is now watching. So the instructor basically shrugged his shoulders and launched the skeet. Kid fires, and is knocked back around until he was almost facing backwards. From the expression on his face, it clearly hurt to have that shotgun jump back and bit him in the shoulder. Instructor says, "told you so" and everyone laughs at the kid.

Okey. Just wondered. As long as you are consistent, then I will say no more.

I am consistent. I wouldn't want a longbow named after me, either.

By the way, has Elessar explained his avatar yet? Or am I just extra dense? :?
