html text editor query

Postby Alelou » Fri May 30, 2008 2:27 am

I used to occasionally use BBEdit, an html text editor, back in my Mac days at work. Does anyone know what a cheap PC equivalent of this might be? Dreamweaver seems like a much more involved and expensive program. Do you know of shareware that does this kind of thing that can be safely downloaded? I am leery of most of the free downloads that come up in a general google search, though perhaps I'm just being silly.

There are several available.

One free program is Sea Monkey. It is the HTML/Web Page editor that comes with Firefox. You can find the link to download it at the Mozilla/Firefox page. It is the descendant of the old Netscape editor. Not a bad program in my opinion. More of a WYSIWYG than anything too fancy. But that is all I need. You can edit a page in either HTML code, WYSIWYG mode, HTML tags, or preview mode.

the direct link is http://www.seamonkey-project.org

There is also an open source project that has since been discontinued called NVU. Google it and you will find the link. It is a fairly good one for what it is. Also, MS Frontpage has a stripped down freeware version that you can use.

I presume you already know that Notepad and Wordpad work (shudder) for html editing if you are desperate.

Thanks for the tips. I'm probably getting ahead of myself but I just remember how nice BBEdit was in that it allowed insecure me to preview everything I did every five minutes.

I put all the little buggers in by hand and then stick it in the template to see if it works to check it. 8) Guess I'd better join the 21st century, huh?

I also use SeaMonkey. It's pretty good for a WYSIWYG editor.

There's also something called HTML-Kit that I used for my other websites. Here's the link:

Pretty straightforward and easy to use. :) Hope that helps!

:) Thanks, all. I did download seamonkey and it allowed me to preview exactly how I was screwing up my code, so it was exactly what I needed! And I used Notepad too.

Now if I can just wrap my ahead around ftp...

google "open source" + "ftp" + "download manager"

Failing that, go to downloads.com. They have a pot full of programs that make ftp a no brainer for both uploading and downloading. I used to use gftp. Dunno if it is still extant.

I already downloaded Smart FTP and I even used it but I still find it perplexing. It's the wrapping the brain around it part that is taking me a little time...

Hey, I didn't even know what an avatar was a few months ago. For an old fossil like me this is great progress.

That ain't funny. Someone who has issues with a WYSIWYG HTML editor? That ain't funny man. That's cruel. *snicker*

Console... Command line...

:guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw:

Show of hands please. How many people here have ever done ANYTHING at the command line?
