I don't really care for that decon scene, actually. It feels icky and obvious and out of place. It could have been really smoldering, but they overdid it with the cinematography and editing and turned it into this weird soft porn interlude in the midst of a Star Trek episode.

I'd be interested in discussing this, if you'd be up for it.

?? But Foundations doesn't have cinematography or editing, right? I don't remember anything terribly wrong with the dialogue -- clearly they imagined these two would be trying hard to ignore or at least pretend to ignore the fact they were each mostly naked and gorgeous. It's the way they shot it that just didn't fit.

Of course, I also don't see much need for decon gel. I mean, come on. If you're really worried about contamination, how about a fine spray booth? You could do that quickly in a very small area without making people spread goop inaccurately all over each other.

I'd have to find the German screenshot site that has a lot more shots of TnT in the decon chamber than trekcore does. And I think I'm still not going to go there. I'm surprised the show didn't edit that shot out, frankly. It's kind of like ... whoah, nellie ... that's more than just ACTING....

Well, I'm not a director, so I'm just pulling this out of my butt, but I would have backed off the long, lingering meat shots of smoothing oil on blue pecs and asses and such and done more eye to eye contact, because these two are sexiest when they're in each other's faces. And I'd kill for a shot of Trip looking a little embarrassed or overwhelmed when he's not facing her. And if T'Pol had to take a steadying breath or swallow at some point I'd be fine with that too. Maybe part of the reason the scene doesn't work for me is that they're acting like they're two professionals but the camera is lingering voyeuristically on every curve -- it's a disconnect. Let them react to the situation they're in with a little more strain. The one part of this scene that really smolders in an appropriate way is when he does her ears (illogical as that is) and she turns around impatiently and they're face to face for a moment. It's not horrible when they're just arguing -- they're always sexy when they argue. It's the gratuitous close-up cheesecake shots that screw it up and make it feel out of place in the episode.

I think it WAS smoldering. Ridiculous and out of place, but smoldering. What makes it smoldering? Him reaching inside the waistband of her pants. Sorry, no deep thoughts to contribute.

Maybe this is one of those "so awful it's good" things. It always bothered me that Trip/Connor had shaved for that scene. Every subsequent undressed scene he has chest hair. It added to the "something totally out of place" aspect of it, but AH, so what? It was pretty good!

Okay, yeah it smolders. Maybe what I would prefer is smoldering AND being of a piece the rest of the episode instead of sticking out like a ... um, well...

Bleh. I always fast forward through the decon scene. It's so painfully obviously meant to be titilating that it's not. It's awkward, sudden, out of place, ill-timed and otherwise forced. It's like when I'm (trying) to watch some HBO series and there's this interesting plot and all of the sudden hairless apes in funny positions are making funny noises OMGWTFBBQ can I have the plot back, please? Perhaps I just watch shows from a different perspective, one that involves my imagination being way more provocative and detailed than any tacky on screen sex scene.

On top of that, T'Pol wouldn't touch his hand to shake it but she doesn't hit the ceiling and stick to it when he touches her with a handful of decon gel? It would have been hilarious if cool, controlled T'Pol had yelped and jumped away during that scene. If Trip had suddenly realized that she wasn't just a snob about the touching thing. The level of physical comfort required so that those two could bicker while feeling each other up is something that doesn't belong until season 3 or so. It was... it was PWP. The viewer was expected to ignore the utter implausiblity of such an exchange due to the presumably overwhelming/distracting sexual titilation.

So, yeah, fast-forward is my friend.

That's a good point about their apparent level of comfort. It is all wrong.

Though if you ask me they never really played T'Pol as being freaked out by physical contact except with that handshake and the way she ate breadsticks with knife and fork. She seemed to acclimate to human norms awfully fast. Maybe they just got lazy.
