I saw some fanzines being sold at the VERY FIRST Vegas con i went to in 2005... The Chinese Calendar Year of the Two-Headed Beast Bermaga :doubt: , but... since then, I've never heard or seen a hint of such a thing again. I kind of got the impression that the selling of them got nipped in the bud by copyright police, but who knows.

Actually, I was about 3/4 done with YMAM1 when I met the girl selling the fanzines and told her I wrote FF and she gave me her card... then I looked at their selection and found that 97.5% of what tehy sold was slash  . I think I might've told this story already. I was looking through it and it was also all illustrated, and I forget how it went, but the lady asked to make sure I knew they were all slash, and my mom, lol, goes "What does that mean?" and I think I went "uhh.... you mean like violent?" and they were like "No like homoerotica" and I think I just went " *eyes slowly panning downward at the fanfic*" --O'Brien and Garek--, --O'Brien and Bashir--, --O'Brien and Sisko--, --Kirk and Spock--, --Kirk, Spock, and McCoy--, and I just... oooooooohh-KAY.. Anyway, that was my first encounter with slash and the K/S thing.

I think the funniest part was that the titles were all sufficiently poetic or obscure that I didn't pick up just from the titles that anything was different about them. Then when I knew, it was hilarious because you would have like, "A Night for Two" with Garek and O'Brien.

A lot of people in the fandom started out as Spock/Christine shippers. The funny thing is...MY first ship was Spock and the Romulan Commander from Enterprise Incident! I wonder what that says about me???

Oh, and Picard/Crusher was another great ship!! I melted into a puddle when the episode Attached first aired!

Any way, zines are still great in a lot of ways. You don't get the instant gratification that you do on the net, but there is often artwork accompanying the stories that you don't get on the web,and unlike a lot of web archives, most zine editors put things through an editing process so a certain minimum standard of quality is met, so oftentimes you don't have to wade through what you don't want in order to get to what you do want. That's not to say that there haven't been some crappy zines out there, it happens, but those zines and editors usually don't last long and that's part of the reason why the zine community continues to thrive, even in newer fandoms like Harry Potter and 24 and Stargate. :D

My first encounter with slash was at a con in Detroit. I never knew that people read or wrote that stuff. I was 18, and I was traumatized! lol

One thing I noticed at Media West is that there's a lot of slash in EVERY fandom, it's not unique to things Trek. I don't condemn it, I just don't "get" it, you know? I'm not bothered by stories about characters who are canonically gay or bisexual like Willow from Buffy or Jack from Torchwood, but the whole Kirk/Spock and Luke/Han thing is just "WTF?" for me.

Before my time in active fandom, I'm told that things at Media West were so dominated by slash, that it was almost like there was supposed to be something wrong with us het readers and writers. Now things have leveled off some and there's more of a spirit of cooperation, or at least "if you don't like it, don't read it" from both sides.

Any way, regarding the question of zines being sold at cons, I'm assuming what you went to was a Creation con? It's harder to sell them at COMMERCIAL cons these days; companies like Creation don't put cons on for the love of the fandom, they put them on for the almighty buck. So they're going to be a little more diligent about that because they want more control over what goes on. But if you go to a more grass-roots con that's put on BY fans FOR fans, you can find them, no problem. Plus, many people like Cheree and myself who are still involved with their production have "crossed over" into the Information Super Highway and let it be known there that we have them available.

Ah, yes, I still remember three adults screaming out loud in frustration during that episode, in the campfire scene.

That ep irritated the hell out of me. After all the coy "let's have a ship and not have a ship at the same time" crap like that, I was amazed to see TnT actually getting something on that saw some actual development. At least until the last episode, when they jumped back to infuriating coy crap again. Grrrr.

I didn't have a ship in TOS. I thought Nurse Chapel was embarrassing. My brothers and I would hide our faces and yell, "Oh yuck!" when Kirk started kissing his alien of the week. But then I was pretty slow to cotton onto the fun of ships in real life too. 8)

I'm fairly new here been hanging around here and fan fiction for a while now reading all the great stories. I started writing a story more like a movie in my head and then it sounded like a good idea to write down. I started doing that last month and have posted 9 chapters on fan fiction. I'd have submitted here, but your rules say new writers must post 1 complete story before chapters are allowed. This story is ongoing and I have no idea where or when it will end, so if you want to read it it's at: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4514374/1/The_Journey. I have tried to catch proofreading errors, but it's an ongoing process. If you catch big errors or have any suggestions, please let me know. Email address: pdsldl@yahoo.com

My story is based on canon, with a couple of exceptions. I will never believe T'Pol would become addicted to a drug, the series ended for me after Terra Prime, and although Scott Bakula is an excellent actor his part and portrayal of Captain Archer was all over the map and I didn't like him. I haven't read any fanfic for a couple of months now, but what I read before I'm sure shows up in my story. It is not done intentionally, I just read something that sounded interesting and added my own twist to it. I just wanted my two favorite characters to have a better story than TPTB seemed to think they deserved. 8) 8) 8)

I hope we aren't scaring off to many writers with that "rule." Nine chapters?! Semi-end it, leave a cliffhanger, and send it in! Then continue in "The Sequel"!

(That's what I do.)

I am considering that. I am not at a point where I can do that yet. As soon as I get there I will transition to part II of the journey. Thanks

I know I'm probably wrong, because I don't have any right to push anyone, but I have seen many new members joining us on the site.
All right, I would be very pleased to know them, and - in particular - well! A "Wine tasting" is perfect for a gourmand Italian as I am!
