Not Trek-related....at all

Postby Ezinma88 » Tue Nov 04, 2008 1:02 am

Just wondering how many people here also watch non-Trek-related sci-fi shows. I'm trying to broaden my knowledge-base....at least that's what I keep telling people who catch me watching old videos of Red Dwarf!

I have just discovered the joys of Battlestar Galactica and was hoping that the Americans among you may have spoilers/news of what is to come in the final part of the series.

I hear there was also an 80's version, with cylons who looked suspiciously like glam-rockers. Is it worth watching these episodes for nuggets of spoiler-goodness?

I can't speak to Battlestar Galactica, but I am a huge fan of Stargate: SG-1, especially the first 8 seasons.

I'm rigidly monothematic.
Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four

And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

Oh, heck yeah!

Though not a TV show, I'm a huge Star Wars fan.

Also, I watch Battlestar Galactica, Life On Mars (both BBC and US), Heroes, and Sarah Connor Chronicles.

And though not in production any more, I am also a big fan of Buffy, Moonlight, and Blood Ties...though those are more horror, I suppose.

The original Battlestar Galactica from the late 70s is kinda cheesy, but it'll be fun to watch to see the parallels and differences between it and the newer one. Don't waste your time on Galactica 1980--it SUCKED! :upchuck:

Watch Babylon 5. I actually think that's better than any Trek.

Farscape is pretty good too. And Firefly is easy to watch. It only lasted 13 episodes (plus a movie to wrap thing up).

I watch Lost - which only recently became sci-fi'ish, Life, which isn't sci-fi at all, Chuck, which isn't really sci fi, (not REALLY, it's just a nerdy sitcom), and Big Bang Theory which is the same thing.

Oh, I left out Doctor Who and Torchwood. Both are great shows! I've only started watching Doctor Who since it came back with Chris Eccleston, and I love David Tennant, and now I'm watching older ones from the DVD store across town. Man, with the older ones you can sure tell when the BBC had like NO money--the props and sets were more like a high school play and the special effects weren't very special at all, but Tom Baker made a wonderful Doctor and for the most part the stories were pretty good.

Torchwood is a spinoff of Doctor Who, it's main character Captain Jack Harkness having been introduced in the DW episode "The Empty Child." It's darker and grittier though, which for most people I don't think is a problem. You'll see Jack make appearances on Doctor Who from time to time, but you'll never see the Doctor on Torchwood, because Torchwood isn't for kids, and kids will want to see the Doctor, so...

To clarify, though, Doctor Who isn't dumbed down or kiddiefied; it's just "family friendly."

I like most sci-fi, including some that others don't like.

Let's see: Firefly, nuBSG (mostly for the 1st season), B5 (not as good as DS9, sorry), Terminator, Iron Man, the first two Alien movies, the Stargate movie and the first 5 seasons of SG-1, Starship Troopers (both first movies, but haven't seen third one yet), The Fifth Element, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Pitch Black, Slither, Shaun of the Dead, Ghost in the Shell (mostly just like the series), the rebooted Batman movies, The Abyss... There are probably others I just can't think of right now.

I watched Farscape, which I love. I watched Babylon 5 while growing up, and now I'm watching the re-runs. I think that along with Trek is it for me on TV Sci-Fi...

In addition to Trek-verse science-fiction I've enjoyed StarWars, Red Dwarf, Alien Nation, Babylon5 and Firefly.

Babylon 5 is at the top of my favorite sci-fi list. Yes it was under budget, but financing aside, the writing was A+ and consistent. And speaking of budget... tell me those early TNG episodes do not make you cringe when you watch them now!

Sliders was another series I enjoyed in high school. It wasn't a necessarily thought provoking show, but it was fun and amusing.

I really liked the first two seasons of the Battlestar Galactica reboot, though my interest began to wane when it didn't synch with my schedule.

I also liked Threshold, not so much the concept, but the dynamics of the characters. Peter Dinklage and Brent Spiner's respective characters playing off each other was always fun to watch. And Carla Gugino was, and still is, HOT. I thought it was a well casted series, even though he that shall not be mentioned was involved in the project.

Another in that realm of Aliens Among Us that I thought was an excellent show was Invasion. The intrigue was palpable and compelling.

I never cared for X-Files, I thought Mulder was a mopey prat and I never understood what Scully ever saw in him.

SG-1 was another one I couldn't get into. I found the characters arrogant and unsympathetic and always rooted for the 'bad guys', although the SG-1 characters weren't nearly as unlikable as the Atlantis crew. I'm all for the Wraith invasion there.

Heroes is a current favorite of mine, although I've been a little bothered by the directions of things this season and the allocation of powers and characterization of the female complement of the series.

As for the more supernatural/horror type of series, I liked BtVS before it became pedophile fare with the introduction of Angel and Wolf Lake. I thought it was a smart and cheeky series, and American Gothic. Gary Cole's character was CREEPY TWISTED  . The Sci-Fi channel needs to re-run that again!

Babylon5 has some really great shows during the differnt seasons of the show leading up to the Shadow War story arc build over the first few seasons great characters in this series.Stargate1 and Atlantis. battestar Galactice the 70's series and the first 2 seasons of the reboot Galactica I later lost interest in it. Of course Star wars- through Return of Jedi. The Abyss nice mystery with a sci-fi twist.
