I am following the Amercian election now for months (including the primaires!) and I noticed a couple of typical difference between the Dutch system and the American.
It may be of interest for any one or may inspire some one who is writing about the Vulcan parlement or something.

- no registration, everybody who can vote gets a vote-card in the mail with your name, birth date and place where you can vote. If you can't vote for any reason, you can sign the card on the back to give some one else the right to vote for you.
- Electionday is always on a Wednesday, the most neutral day of the week.
- Every vote counts. The number of votes are divided by 150 - that number is the election threshold. There are 150 seats in parlement. When a party gets 2x election threshold, they get 2 members of that party in the parlement etc. The party with the most members in parlement, is the winning party and delivers the prime minister.
- The winning party is the basic of the new coalition, because no party has enough seats in parlement to rule alone. A coalition-government is formed.
- We have about 10 parties in parlement.
- Most coalitions are formed by two big parties and one small one.
- Compromise is the basic of Dutch politics. :D
I could go on, but that would be very boring....

I leave you with one Dutch saying "When you don't vote, you have no right to complain", (after the election that is).
So enjoy your democratic right to vote :D
Love is a verb.

Actually, "When you don't vote, you have no right to complain" is a saying here too. 8)

We have a weird system, but it adds a sort of inherent stability to our politics. It requires far too much money of candidates at all levels, however, which makes it very prone to corruption. I wish I could believe a Democratic President and strong majority in Congress would result in real reform in that area, but I'll only believe that when I see it.

On the plus side, our economy probaby benefited from the huge infusion of cash...

As I said on "The Happy News thread", the last week-end my wife and I went to Rome.
And, frankly, Rome is beautiful, really. Believe me.
I went to it many times, but it is always attractive and different.
I took some pictures and I send them to all of you.

Here you can look at me in front of the Colosseum, by night. Evocative, isn't it? (Colosseum, not me!)
Image

Something better. My wife in front of "The Mouth of Truth".

Don't you know what is The Mouth of Truth"? Here!

And now, look at this. Well! - you might say - what the hell is this man doing?
Image

Oh well! I know I'm NOT Gregory Peck in "Roman Holidays", but...

Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to

And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

I have to go to Rome when it's not summer and +30C. I cant' even remember much about the city just how much I was suffering in the heat.

It's the evening the better and sweeter moment in Rome. Especially during the autumn, when it occurs the "OTTOBRATE" ( the trees and the sky show their autumnal colours) , or during the spring, when a mild "VENTICELLO" (a soft and slight wind) sweetens the atmosphere, and brings the lovers to love. :)

We just had our independence day celebrations and we have interesting way of celebrating. Those few that get an invitation go to the president's castle to celebrate. The rest of us watch those people walk and greet the president from the television with commentators telling us who the people are and facts about them or just admiring or critisising their dresses. And weeks beforehand there are lots of talk in the press who have got invitations and what kind of dresses do they have and so on.
Here are few samples.
