One of the central principles in "A Brief History of Time" was the idea that we can never know anything about what happened before the birth of the Universe because the big bang was a singularity point, a point at which all "history lines" of a particle or an object of any kind, were cut off. This is pretty neat stuff. I've been an inflation proponent for awhile, since I first read Andre Linde's first paper on it in high school.
