Alelou--I read and reviewed your latest chapter today (which was great, by the way!!), but there seems to be some minor crunkage with the punctuation, like it's a coding thing. Like, instead of quotation marks, I see question marks inside little diamonds, that kind of things.

And no, I haven't been drinking tonight.

Updated: I went and looked but I don't see what you're describing. Could it be the cell phone browser? Did you try reading any other TS stories on it?

Funny you should ask about the cell phone's browser, because that isn't where I saw the crunkage. In fact, certain punctuation like quote marks, ellipses, and sometimes dashes never show up when I use the cell phone's browser to read stories, and whether or not there's spacing between paragraphs is a crapshoot. I never mentioned it before because it's not like a lot of people go around reading TriS stuff on their phones unless they've got a Crackberry or something; I just figured it had to do with some kind of limitation with my browser, like it interprets that stuff as code it doesn't know what to do with or whatever.

I didn't notice the funny symbols until I got home and viewed the story through Firefox on my regular computer. I still see them today, however it only seems to be Chapter Four of your story, no others. I haven't had a chance to try and look at it thru Explorer yet, as I only have about 45 minutes between jobs today so after I post this I have to change my clothes, fix my hair, and get to the salon...where I will most likely read something else through my phone, lol. :lol:

I just looked at in Firefox myself. I still don't see anything. Anyone else having this issue? I've done all the coding on these exactly the same so there shouldn't be any difference.

The pages include non-ASCII characters (at a minimum the quotes) but do not specify a character set. I'm guessing the character set used is ISO-8859-1, but it could be ISO-8859-5 or UTF-8 too. The particular browser in question is probably configured in such a way as to get confused as how to handle the non-ASCII characters.

There is some more information about HTML character encoding at W3C's site. You'll probably have to insert a line in the <head></head> that looks like:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">

Another way is to switch to XHTML and specify it on the top line. Go to my site and view the source to see what XHTML looks like. It's just a pickier version of HTML.

How I handle it in my stories is just to make certain there are no non-ASCII characters. The big nasties are single and double quotes.

But shouldn't that affect all the stories? These chapters all originated from the same Word file and got marked up in exactly the same way.

I'll have to go in and look at the css code more carefully.

Maybe I accidentally deleted a line when I put the title in or something.

BTW, it's so obvious who the buyer is. It's Ah'len.

She's been pining away from someone who knows their way around an engine room (as well as a box of pebbles) like Trip does. Hoshi's been intercepting her messages and politely brushing her off. Unfortunately, Hoshi made a slight translation mistake in the last response and Ah'len took it the wrong way.

The message Hoshi sent (when properly translated from Xyrillian to English) said: "Commander Tucker is under the control of a Vulcan slut."

Unfortunately, Hoshi wasn't careful in her use of a certain accented vowel. It changed the intended meaning of "is in love with" to "is under the control of". While the change is subtle, I agree, Ah'len overreacted and took it upon herself to save the Commander.

Okay, I put Chapter One in html next to Chapter Four in html and there's no difference. They both have smart quotes. So I really don't get why one is crunky and the other isn't. And technically, every file I've put up for the last five days ought to be equally crunky, or at least all the ones that started as Word files, which means every one except the stuff by Transwarp, who provides (very lovely) text files.

Doesn't help that I can't see the crunk even on the one that is crunky. Anyone out there? Kevin, are you seeing it or just sharing your general html expertise? Aquarius, if you're still seeing it, copy and paste it into a PM to me. Maybe I'll be able to see it then.

I used to have to avoid smart quotes back in the days of X-Files listserv or whatever it was. I was really happy not to have to deal with that anymore here. I thought we heading toward more automation, not less.

But if someone wants to tell me what character set we're supposed to be using, I don't mind adding it to the file.
