I used to live in a big city that was also the number one in crime in my country. I lived in the poor areas, one neighbourhood I lived is called "Old West", but was nicknamed "Wild West". My family sometimes worried I wasn't safe and me telling some stories didn't help, but I loved living in a big city, with lots of different cultures, food, entertainment and such diversity in people.

Dennis Archer began his term as mayor in '93 and tried to revitalize the city, repair race relations and hostilities between the city and the suburbs, but with only minimal success because people left over from the old administration and the city council were so deeply entrenched he could only go so far before they smacked him down. Sadly he didn't seek a third term, though I hear he may be running for governor, and if he does, that makes me so very happy because honestly I think he's the only hope Michigan has for crawling out of the toilet.
If the city was less interested in settling the score and more about a clean slate for everyone, I'm sure that it could be attained over time; Archer's revitalization plans certainly seemed to be on the right track, as in the mid-late 90s, people were actually moving in to the city again.
