evcake, I also love these tales of what the next door neighbor overheard. This one was very heart-warming as usual. If the neighbor had been southern, the advice would probably have been the old saying, 'You can't kick a dog for being a dog'. I also hope you continue these endearing stories.

WarpGirl, your challege fic was very entertaining. Trip would surely cease to funtion without his pecan pie fix. Apparently, T'Pol learned this early on in their relationship. For a Vulcan, she has a good handle on how to seduce a certain southern gentleman.

Well her intent wasn't really seduction. After all she put the poor man through right now she's just trying to slowly get him to realize she's serious about making things work out. But I'm sure even Vulcan women know that a way to a man's heart is through his stomach. I mean logical thought aside men aren't really all that different no matter what species they are. Hey I live south of the Mason Dixon line myself. But I'm transplanted from up north.

Evcake and Warpgirl, I loved both your entries. The neighbor series are lovely and I enjoy reading them very much! And the pecan-pie story was, well...romantic. I loved T'Pol's idea but I'm not very sure poor Trip will manage to escape unseduced there

Yeah well I think she wants to put him to sleep. I think after all those "white space" arguments a full six hours is needed for our Chief Engineer. He tends to get cranky when tired. So I think we should worry about Trip seducing her! Does she honestly have to do everything? I mean he has to work a little too.

Goodness, it was fun re-reading this thread.

So any way...I gave myself a present for getting good grades in school so far and gave myself permission to do a little leisure writing. I didn't realize it had been so long since I responded to any of my own prompts.

This particular one is an idea I had ever since I posted the "anticipation" prompt, but I just never got around to writing it, until now. Just a short little throwaway, but if anything, it's nice to see it finally come to fruition.



ANTICIPATION

It's warm in Phlox's office. I don't know if he turned up the heat so T'Pol would be comfortable, or if it's just my nerves.

She's got her hands folded in her lap, and she just stares at them quietly, like she's done the last two times.

Two tries. Two disappointments.

We don't dare hope.

But maybe this time...

It's not like T'Pol and I wouldn't have a happy life even if we didn't have a baby. I love her and she loves me, and we both know that's all we really need.

But I made her a promise, that when we got married and were stationed dirtside, I'd give her all the babies she wanted, if Phlox could find a way to make it happen. So here we are. Again.

It's not like we're the only couple in the world that needs help having a baby, but for us, it's really a whole new ballgame—which genes of mine to keep, which genes need to be T'Pol's so we don't end up with a miscarriage, and how to combine them so our kid can grow up without all kinds of problems. Phlox says there's no reason why it shouldn't be possible and, God love him, he's been busting his ass all along, trying to get all the answers.

It's been an awful lot of hoops to jump through, but it's worth it. She's worth it.

What the hell is taking so long?

I can't help it any more. I reach out and grab T'Pol's hand. She's too logical and rational and proud to admit it, but when she looks up at me I can tell the suspense is killing her, too.

I wink and crack a smile—I have to say it, for her sake if not my own. “They say third time's a charm, hon.”

I'm expecting her to tell me all about myself here, how I'm illogical and superstitious and intractable and everything.

Instead she just nods, tracing her thumb back and forth over my wedding band.

It's definitely taking a lot longer than last time. That's gotta be a good sign.

OMG Beautiful. But I gotta say it kind of tore me up a little. My sister is pregnant right now, but she had two miscarriges before and well it was hard on her and her hubby both, I saw their faces in this. But it was really good I'm glad you wrote it.

Excellent! And the payoff here is...that there is no payoff. We still don't know the outcome; we can only hope. It really is all about anticipation.

I also think this was probably a lot more realistic than an easy conception. With two species as different as Humans and Vulcans, it stands to reason that achieving a viable pregnancy wouldn't be quick or easy.
