Anyone for Trek Freecycling?

Postby JadziaKathryn » Thu May 21, 2009 5:35 pm

Erm, best admit that I've never actually done anything on Freecycle. But the basic principle seems good and I know I've read a couple other people with Trek items they don't want.

For instance, I have Borg 4D poster from The Experience that I don't want (and never have, so it's stayed in its cardboard thing for a few years now and I decided it's time for it to go).

Only potential bug is shipping, I guess.

It's just a thought, and I'm curious to know what others think.

Sounds good to me (not the Borg poster, the idea).

I'm a freecycler -- in fact, that's where the stack of my zines I'd been lugging around for twenty-plus years went. Also a sofa, a desk, some chairs, exercise equipment, a dead digital camera and dock, etc. etc... and we used it to pick up free cross-country skies for my husband and my son (though I couldn't convince them to actually use them so this somewhat defeated the purpose of decluttering...)

Gets complicated when you're dealing with people who don't live nearby. Panyasan wanted my TOS Uno game I picked up for fifty cents at the thrift store, but we couldn't figure out the shipping side and it ended up going to a Trekkie friend of my husband's who'd gotten so excited by Star Trek cereal that she'd spontaneously bought our son a box of it... (It tasted like Lucky Charms with marshmallow galaxies...) :)

For the oblivious and uninformed (like myself  ) what the heck is Freecycling? :?
Working on a major fan fic project. Two-thirds done. Hope to put it up in the not TOO distant future.

It's when you give stuff away for free instead of throwing it away or selling it. There's a website (freecycle.com, I think), sort of like Craig's List, where it's broken up by city or region, and people place ads for things they're getting rid of or want. A friend of mine got two kittens that way.

http://www.freecycle.org/

It's primarily designed to help keep crap out of landfills. I think it's great. It does get a little strange -- you'll notice that there are people who will ask for EVERYTHING ("Need laptop" ... "Need working car"...). Then there are people who list everything, including total awful crap (especially in this area, since everyone has to pay for trash disposal). Then there are also people who say they'll come to get your stuff and don't show up. I've been lucky, though.

It definitely beats paying someone to cart an old sofa away to a dump when someone will show up at your house who's actually delighted to get it.

Okay, I have this Borg 4D poster, which is 3'9" high and 2'7" wide. It's in pretty good shape - a few little wrinkles and slightly worn edges from being rolled, but no pinholes, tape rips, etc.

My own personal solution to the shipping is this: I'll pay media mail shipping, and you can do a kind of "pay it forward" and give a couple dollars to the next donation jar you see.

PM me if you want it.

Star Trek Postcard Book - 48 Full Color Postcards! Detatchable And Ready To Use! (TOS)

I have two of these, one intact and one somewhat plundered.

Also a theater giveaway for The Wrath of Khan, 10 pages, about 12x14"

Same for Return of the Jedi, 11x17" folded in half.

Shipping arrangements as above. :)
