Phoenix/Scottsdale Arizona
My husband and I are planning a vacation to one of the Scottsdale Arizona resorts this fall.
Is anyone familiar with Scottsdale/Phoenix? May I pick your brain if you are.
I'd be happt to spill what I know about Chicago to anyone who is interested. It's a beattiful city to visit! I've lived here my whole life!

I grew up there - born in Scottsdale and lived in Phoenix, but only until I was 9, so, I'm not sure how useful I can be with regard to travelling and/or driving.

Re: Phoenix/Scottsdale Arizona
Elessar - I'm looking for information/recommendations on resorts.
We're trying to decide between the Phonecian and the Fairmont.
I've never been to Arizona, but I am very intrigued with the desert. I HATE the cold, and despite living in Chicago my entire life, I am looking forward to retiring to some place where it is warm - all the time. Of course that's quite a long way off, but I've been to Florida, Bahamas, Jamaica, Mexico, California, Nevada, I want to check out Arizona. My best friend lied there for a while and loved it.
Dry heat. No hurricanes. No snow. Now snow boots. No closet full of coats. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

Re: Phoenix/Scottsdale Arizona
My advice is go 1 hour north of Phoenix to Sedona. Sedona, AZ was the best vacatin EVER. Phoenix is, yes, excruciatingly hot, 110 degress on our short visit, and has an ugly smogy sky. Sedona is in the mountains or a canyon or something and has like 80 90 degree temeratures and has impossibly beautiful scenery. Most surpising, pink rocks. I mean all the ground is made of pink rock. It is so Western-looking, that many Westerns are filmed there. There is a canyon nearby where there is a natural waterslide. In a week long-vacation, we spent every other day playing at Slide Rock. It was like the Garden of Eden.
From Sedona, you are within range of many sights: 1000 year old Indian cliff dwelings, Meteor Crator, the painted desert, AND the Grand Canyon.

What she said! Best vacation stuff is outside Phoenix! There's also a great camping area (if you're into camping) called the Moseon (sp?) Rim. It's that area of Arizona that's mountainous and not as brutal hot as the valley.

I will check out the Sedona area right now! It sounds beautiful!!!!
This trip is to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. We plan to come do a Grand Canyon road trip eventually and bring our son, so even if we don't get to stay there this time we'll check it out for our next trip.

Old Tuscon is pretty neat too, but look it up before you go... last time I was there, as was $.89/gallon in Missouri and $.99/gallon in Phoenix!

Re: Phoenix/Scottsdale Arizona
I live in Casa Grande Arizona some 40 miles south of Phoenix.
It is HOT as the hubs of Hell here in the summer.
Advice to go North is spot on. Much to see.
Tucson and bisbee and one or two other old frontier towns like tombstone are mostly tourist attractions these days but worth a day or two trip.
To be Honest, Wife decided we would move to Arizona. I was happy in Wet, soggy, Washington State. I love cool weather, forests, mountais, Lakes and the ocean all if a few hours away.
Most of those things are here in Arizona but not nearly as easy to get to.
Hope you enjoy your trip.

Now is your chance. Tucson being higher in elevation is somewhat cooler than Phoenix.
honk as you go by Casa Granda unless you want to stop in and say a big howdy.

Re: Phoenix/Scottsdale Arizona
Thanks for the info. everyone. We've already decided (after way too much deliberation - we kept going back and forth between Arizona and Vegas, which I've been to twice - never been to Arizona) to go to one of the resorts in Scottsdale. It's just a matter of which one.
I'll have to check out the other locations on another trip. As lovely as they sound, we can't do it all on this trip. We plan to do a lot of relaxing resort - spa type stuff this time.
It is 60 degrees and raining here in the Chicago area. Nothing even remotely summer-like has appeared so far. Dry heat sounds good to me right now. I shouldn't be wearing jeans and a jacket on June 10th!!!!!
