Some of you have mentioned a desire for the DVDs ... just FYI, Amazon is running a big sale right now. You can get the series at 42% off list.

It's still a freakin' hefty investment, though.

Ahem. Does anyone know why Trek DVD sets are among the most expensive? BBC DVD sets are the only ones I've found comparable. The only two kinds I want, of course. Seriously, though, what's with that? Is Paramount just being greedy or is there a less base reason?

They're just greedy. This has been proven by science.

They probably have some sort of fancy equation that includes a variable for the degree of fanaticism evinced by the fans, and ST fans are way off the chart.

I truly wonder why they are so high... EVERYTHING else is ginormously less. I used to think it was the special effects (don't ask, years ago, I was dumb) when the first DVDs came out of the series, and that's why they were so much, but they are STILL so much and there's tons of other sci fi out on DVD.

It may have something to do with Paramount.

A couple of summers ago, there was some big controversy about movie theaters facing the possibility of having to charge a higher admission for Paramount movies than others, because Paramount was charging them more. I don't think it ever came to fruition, though I hardly ever go to the movies because I can't afford it so I wouldn't know first-hand. I don't remember all the details but I'm sure it could be found by a Google search, or maybe if Entertainment Tonight has archives because I remember that's where I initially heard about it.

Any way, if Paramount was trying to boost its profit margin by gouging us at the box office, I'm sure they're not past gouging us in the dvd market, either.

I'm watching SG-1 on megavideo.com and it's free streaming :D with subtitles. Anyone recognize this language? My best guess is a Scandinavian language (KTR?), or German.

A few lines (not a conversation):
"Jag kan inte latsas som ingenting."
"Mar du inte bra?"
"Liksom jag."
"De skjuter i alla fall inte pa oss."

It's got the English speaking parts, all original like, so I'm just curious what other language this is.

OK than please translate. I can read a little German, but Swedish isn't one of my talents.

It's just random sentences. They don't form a coherent narrative so it's rather pointless to translate.

Well, for what it's worth, here goes...

Jag kan inte låtsas som ingenting = I cannot pretend nothing happened
Mår du inte bra? = Are you not feeling well?
Liksom jag = Like I [do?]
De skjuter i alla fall inte på oss = At least they aren't shooting at us

Thank you! I've been wondering what language the subtitles were! That makes sense, too, as I believe you once said that Swedes aren't big fans of dubbing over foreign films/TV shows.

WarpGirl, I know with the last sentence, O'Neill said, "Well, at least they're not shooting at us." I don't know if 'well' translates.

Oh, going by what KTR just said, 'well' doesn't translate in this context.

Yup! And I'm ever so grateful for that.

Well (pardon the pun), in this context they could've translated 'well' into 'nå'. So it would read: "Nå, de skjuter i alla fall inte på oss." But when you use subtitles you have to rationalize. Not every word will make it for reasons of available space. Also, you want the viewers to have a reasonable chance to read it before the next subtitle comes up.
