Re: Randomness
Hey! I have a Swedish friend who got laid off from her job writing Swedish subtitles to English shows. Because apparently you really don't appreciate it enough.

OMG, ANOTHER new chapter! NORTH STAR Chapter 28

I know that in my country people who makes subtitles are being paid by word. It's a art: you have little space to put your translation on the screen and a Dutch sentence is about two times as long as a English one. Most of the times, the subtitles are good, but sometimes they really crack me up. We are like "now that was a bad translation." Learn a lot of English watching subtitled shows!

Are you from Holland? I thought you were Asian. Boy I am an idiot. I just thought your screen-name looked Asian.

Yes, my screen-name is Asian. It's Japanese in fact, it's a Japanese joke that my husband and I used to make when we lived there. I lived in Japan and studied Japanese culture and language for almost two years. My mother-in-law came from Indonesia and my husband is in many ways Asian. I do feel very comfortable around Asians.
So you're not a idiot, Warpgirl to get the Asian connection.

Re: Randomness
Since I'm monothematic, I've thought of sharing a link with the most didactic thing I've ever seen about the jury system. It's an episode of Q.E.D. , A japanese drama (sorry, Dorama.) I'm ashamed to confess that I usually watch Japanese doramas, it's a guilty pleasure of mine. Yes, the acting it's horrible (except some cases), the narration is a bit blah and the scripts are incredible, but they make me feel better.
Anyway, as I was saying, the series it's called Q.E.D. (that comes from Latin Quod Erat Demonstrandum), it's about a girl, 16-17 years old Kana (energetic and tomboyish) that along with her classmate Toma (a genious boy) resolves crimes. You know, nothing new under the sun. Anyway, you don't have to know much more than this to follow the episode, in fact, you can skip everything except the "Mock trial", because that's what the episode is about. Jury system is going (was going) to be stablished in Japan and the episode uses it as an excuse. As I've said, it's incredibly didactic, it shows you how it works. And it shows you another thing too. I'm not going to say it just in case somebody wants to watch the episode. But Toma's line of argument is so accurate that, although absolutely true, nobody does it in real life. Not even professional Judges. But it's what the person that judges must do!
Anyway, HERE is the chapter (it contains the links for the three parts, but it will open a new window to dailymotion each time.)
By the way, don't expect "12 Angry Men". It has nothing to do with it (the quality, to begin with). I know, it's one of my favorite movies.
PS: I'm warning you the acting is horrible. Don't come to me later complaining about it.

Or it could just be the economic downturn, with TV networks perhaps not buying as many programs as they used to...

While I appreciate that we subtitle (one of the reasons I know English very well), the translations many times leave a lot to be desired. And they get visually in the way. Since I now know English very well, I prefer to watch TV shows and movies without them. Thank god for DVDs.

It happened a couple of years ago, so I don't know if it was the economy...

Really bad science in new mini-series "Impact" on ABC next week.
Oh, and it stars, among others, Steven Culp (Major Hayes) and James Cromwell (Zefram Cochrane).

Oh, I read about this earlier this evening! What a load of crap! He was blowing a kiss to his family, but I'll bet the faculty just assumed he was telling the school to "kiss off."

OK question, in ENT and TOS red is engineering, and poor hapless crewman and ensigns slated to die. Gold is command. In TNG and subsequent ST gold is engineering and red is command. Why the change?

Make-up.
When TNG rolled around they found that having a pale Data in a red shirt didn't look very good, so they switched colours. I don't know if there was ever an in-house explanation given.
Myself, I think it's a pity. It makes the old "redshirt joke" harder to explain to Trek viewers that don't know TOS very much.
