Re: Trip's Mistakes
If you admit his intentions were right then you have to admit his actions were right too.
How was he supposed to go about it?
I have said the others viewed it as "that is the way it is" and they weren't going to change their minds. they would NOT help trip in any way and would try to stop him.
ARcher had another reason. He was hoping to get some technology from the Vissens. but they had their own brand of the non inteference with other races less tehnologicaly advanced as they were. So they would not give Archer or Enterpris anything. but Archer was hoping. He thought that Trip was derailing that.
Trip helped Charles in the only way he coud because the others did not and would not understand what he understood.

I don't think the Cogenitor was murdered. They're rare and the Vissians need them to procreate, you don't just kill one. Besides they belong to the government if I remember right. The couple said they had been on a government list.

Re: Trip's Mistakes
I most CERTAINLY DO NOT have to agree that his actions were right!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lot's of things have been done under good intentions that have turned tragic. The inventer of the first automatic machine gun invented it hoping it would be a "humane" way to kill soldiers and horrify people into giving up war. When he saw the opposite reaction he killed himself. And now look at all of the carnage that resulted from that invention. Was that man a good man. YES! But he believed it was the worst mistake he had ever made.

I agree with you that you have to be careful what you do in an alien culture and giving weapons or technology that is far too advance is a no-no, but treating some one with respect and diginty and as a person, is an act of kindness and very different then creating a weapon for what ever noble reason.
Love is a verb.

Re: Trip's Mistakes
I'm just saying that bad things could have happened if the Vissians had been different. Should Trip have treated the Cogenitor with respect? Yes. Should he have tried to help? Yes. Maybe by teaching the Vissians how humans would view the arrangement as slavery, and explaining why it was wrong. So it might not have changed the situation, BUT it might have started the Captain thinking. BUT he did not have the right to lie and sneak around. That put EVERYONE at risk.

Re: Trip's Mistakes
But they were treated as property of the government. they had no choices they were assigned to a couple and once they filled thier role were sent back to be assigned to another couple.
If they were that important to the procration ofthe Vissen species they they should have been treated withmor respect and dignity.
I got the idea that they were kept in a closet and taken out when needed.
I agree that charles suicide didn't make sense. He was intelligent enough to realize that he could teach others of his kind and possibly open new doors for them...Certainly to eventually lead to a better life and status.
I agree too with KTR that what Trip saw was morally wrong and what he ws trying to do was morally right.

Re: Trip's Mistakes
But it isn't really the issue. Trip's actions were wrong because they put the ship at risk. Just because the Vissians DID NOT attack does not meant they COULDN'T. If they had that would have been Trip's fault and any lives lost would be on his head.

Re: Trip's Mistakes
You see Trip as sly, sneaky, underhanded.
I see him as a symbol of everything that can be good and right in a human
Compassion, Moral courage, According others dignity and respect, the desire to lift up the underdog and fighting for anothers right to exist as a being not an obejct.
T-Pol I can give a bye to bcause she was being a logical, cautiouus Vulcan.
ARcher I couldn't. He denied Charles Asylym. but in a later episode he granted Rajiin Asylym and she had a looser claim on it than Charles did. ARcher was a moral coward and had no compassion. he embodied everythg that is wrong in umans.
IMHO

Re: Trip's Mistakes
I DO NOT see Trip as "Sly sneaky and underhanded" AT ALL! I see him the same way you do Silverbullet. If it had been a mission where it was just his own risk I'd applaud him. But it wasn't there were other people to consider. He took an unacceptable risk because it had the potential to affect THE CREW adversely.

Re: Trip's Mistakes
Why can't this argument have two answers? Does there have to be just one? Trip was morally right to befriend Charles and offer the "human" perspective. He was politically wrong to do either.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that what a board is for. To discuss and occasionally spar about the issues in a subject. Otherwise why bother to do this at all? I'm confused.

Re: Trip's Mistakes
Um OK thanks!
But seriously I never said Trip's opinions or morals were wrong. I never said the Vissians were right, or that the Cogenitor shouldn't be helped. I said the WAY he did all of that was wrong. So didn't I say what Eian said?
