In Seattle we usually get one chance at summer. This must be it.

[RISING SHRIEK] AND I USED TO HAVE A HEAT PUMP WOT COOLED ME OFF BUT I SOLD THAT HOUSE AND NOW I LIVE IN A WEE CUTE COTTAGE ON THE LAKE EXCEPT THAT RIGHT NOW IT'S A WEE CUTE DEADLY OVEN AND THE LAKE'S NO MORE THAN LUKEWARM MUDDY SAUCE WITH WHICH TO BASTE ONESELF. [/RISING SHRIEK]

Weather patterns are very weird this summer. (We're finally normally hot and humid here, for the very first time since June -- I don't like it, but at least it's normal.)

The Chicago Area is experiencing the coolest summer in recorded history. I've used the air conditioning fewwe than 10 times so far this summer. The days have been in the 70s and the evenings in the 60s.

I like it.

I think the Pacific Northwest is paying the price for our comfort, though. It's in three digits in Seattle and Portland (and probably up where Enterprikayak lives too). That's never been seen before there. They don't even HAVE air conditioning usually.

Not that it's so comfortable anymore here. It's muggy as hell. It's also raining every freakin' day. I was going to go fill out all my HR paperwork at the college this morning until I looked at the weather report and realized that if I didn't mow the lawn this morning I might not be able to do it again for days.

A husband and a teenage son and you have to mow the lawn? Hope you've got a riding mower. Those aren't bad if it's not too hilly.

Yeah, the weather has been freakishly weird this summer. We've gotten so much rain - the farmers have a serious lack of hay and there are reports of stunted, possibly rotting-in-the-field corn crops.

Ek, your description sounds awful, but you worded it amusingly.

A riding mower on our slope could probably roll over and kill somebody. But yeah, I do have to start pushing the teenage son harder. But it's a little complicated in that he's really allergic to grass and it gives him asthma. The husband ... he's working right now, I'm not. I can use the exercise. (Besides, he always tells me he's going to do it the NEXT day... and when he finally gets around to it he wants to scalp it ... so if I want to avoid getting even more weeds than we already have, it's pretty much up to me.)

We have a really weird summer over here too. Lots and lots of rain... Fortunately I'm able to time the days when I have to go outside to when it's not pouring down.

A few little towns over, close to the Mass border (the one where Bether works) got SIX INCHES OF RAIN in one night last night. That's a three month supply of rain on ground that was already saturated. The road between here and there is washed out. There's flooding all over that part of the county -- but here it was no big deal (yet another downpour, but nothing like THAT). In fact I had no idea until I watched the news tonight.

(Check in with us, Bether!)

Yep, one bridge in Stephentown is no more . The store seemed to be the place to be today for gathering directions. Too bad I'm no good at giving directions...or taking detours... But we're all here and in one piece. Just a little wet...

No rain today. Just waiting for the typhoons to set in... We did get one last Saturday, but it went from a number 3 signal to a number 8 much too late to cancel my work day for me.

Bah!

What's the point of having a tropical cyclone thing, battering down bamboo scaffolding, whisking away litter bins and breaking shop windows, while hurling 6cm of rain down hour after hour all day, if you don't get the day off?

I have high hopes for August. I believe we had two number 8's last year, and as such I got two days off. Not together, unfortunately. But it was nice. :)

This pouring down rain today at this point is totally uncool. There just isn't anywhere else for it to go but into basements and roadways. Hopefully my husband can get home from work. I can't even believe all of the precipitation we've been having this summer.

I know! On our way to the restaurant was the first time I've ever heard the emergency broadcast system kick in for an ACTUAL emergency broadcast -- for flash flood warnings all through the Berkshires and Columbia County. I hope your husband drives carefully!!!!

Typhoon signal number 8 now hoisted by Hong Kong Observatory... Bugger! I wanted it to hit about noon tomorrow (it's now 11.15pm, Tuesday), so we'd all be told to stay at home!

GRRR!
