Re: The Weather Channel
I am Retired. Having a good time IS my job

Re: The Weather Channel
The last two weeks we had very good weather, sunny, not too hot, which was great, because I had my summer holiday. Three weeks! Today it was about 30 degree C and because we have lots and lots of channels and rivers and my country borders on one side with the sea, when it's hot, it's always warm and humid. It was a bit too warm in our small apartment (which is warm in the summer and cold in the winter
), but tomorrow we are getting better (less warm) weather. And Monday back to work.

Love is a verb.

Re: The Weather Channel
We had a few humid days to remind us what that feels like, but now it's gorgeous again. In fact, it was COLD last night. And not even raining, for a change.
However, I'm STILL waiting for the tomatoes to ripen, and I think this is going to be the worst pepper and eggplant year ever. The zukes (courgettes) are going gangbusters, though. Thank God I only planted two.
I just planted two low-bush blueberries. We'll see if they grow at least as well as the wild ones already on the property (like the one that's still growing even though it's crushed under a pile of black locust logs), or if actually TRYING to grow them on purpose will kill them.

Re: The Weather Channel
It's FINALLY starting to act like summer around here.
My garden is crap this year. It's just been too chilly and too dry. Yeah, we've watered it, but you know, I swear the plants can tell the difference. There's usually such a lush, green growth spurt after a good rain; when it comes out of a hose, I think the most you're doing is keeping the plants alive.
I should be up to my eyeballs in tomatoes by now. It's just sad out there.
Plus, the neighbor behind us didn't help, spraying Round Up along the fence line. I wanted to punch him in the nose.
Today it rained most of the day, then it stopped and got REALLY muggy. Now there's a thunderstorm, and the next couple of days are supposed to be really gross, in the high 90s and humid.
No yard work for me tomorrow.

Re: The Weather Channel
Ugh. Round-Up drift is very un-neighborly.
I have been known to resort to Round-up in the past, but nowadays I mostly smother things with newspaper and mulch, hand-pull, or drizzle boiling water on them (that works great for the stuff in the cracks of our steps).
There's no way to stand there with a hose and water things enough. You need a sprinkler or a soaker hose or irrigation. The human capacity to stand there with a hose just isn't long enough to get a plant well and truly watered, IMO. Not unless you're the kind who's happy sticking your finger in the dirt to see how far down it's actually wet every couple of minutes. Plus, in our yard, standing anywhere with a hose during good watering times is like announcing to every mosquito and fly within flying distance that the all-you-can eat buffet is now open.
I do use a hose to fill up the self-watering containers (which normally are great for peppers, but can't overcome the cold this year). But they let you know when they're full. (Water comes out the hole.)

I have two cherry tomato plants, and the poor things look so pathetic. I think they're half-drowned, and there was so much rain when they (valiantly) tried flowering, each plant has one little cherry tomato growing.
At least we've had good weather the last few days. I worked 'til 11 last night, putting out new fall clothes, and on the way home I drove with the window open because it was so lovely. That is more like summer, thankyouverymuch.
