Re: Randomness
Yeah well thanks to daddy putting a hole in my floor when he replaced my shower, I got a surprise in the form of MICE this summer. Now I personally think all mouse traps are vicious ways to deal with it so thankfully there is my pretty kitty. BUT she hasn't figured out she's actually killing them. She "plays" but then when they die she thinks they're asleep so she keeps waiting for them to wake up. I watched her with one, and she was trying to be gentle, so she gets very confused when they die. Its so sweet.

Re: Randomness
If I were to get a cat I'd have to keep it indoors due to all the raccoons and coyotes around here. I'm considering setting a trap out tonight again to try and catch the pooping varmint but last time something (raccoon?) took the trap. My neighbor found it in his yard with teeth marks all over it. SOMETHING really wanted that peanut butter!
We have voles, too. Maybe that's what's using my porch as a porta potty?

Re: Randomness
Be careful with traps at night. You can get skunks in there...
(Are you certain you don't have bears? Seems to me they've followed the coyotes in here... Although I dare say for peanutbutter a determined squirrel would do quite a lot of dragging and gnawing. I've been amazed at what they can do to birdfeeders.)
You could try spreading some hot pepper flakes around poop central. Those can quickly discourage a lot of mammals.

Re: Randomness
Vegetables and fruit are usually still alive when you eat them. Just some food for thought.

WOW I never ever thought of that. But Veggies don't have brains or pain recepters either. I don't consider my self a carnivor though. I consider myself a true omnivore with an emphasis on veggies and grains.

It's true, they can't yelp when you bite them, but it's still something I like to torment the "death free" types with on occasion.

Re: Randomness
Well I don't have a problem with eating animals or killing them for other reasons in specific situations. I DO have a problem with the METHOD of killing things sometimes. Case in point.... Mouse Traps in 99.9% of the time the only way to get rid of mice from your home is to kill them. I get that. I don't like it, but I get it. Now here's my problem, Mouse traps are unreasonably cruel. The snap traps don't kill instantly, the glue traps make them starve to death, the poison is horrific. Why oh why isn't there a man-made trap for people without cats that takes care of the problem without causing undo suffering to the mice????????? WHY? Now I have a beautiful cat that is taking care of the problem for me, and I may be sick but I watched her deal with the mouse, and she wasn't cruel. She was actually gentle with it. She was shcoked when it ended up dead and kept bugging me to fix it. Surely if a preditory animal doesn't make it's victims suffer, humans should be able how to kill mice in a way without horrific suffering.

Your cat is a lot sweeter to its prey than mine is, then. Feral kitty loves to bat the thing around ... let it almost escape ... then pounce. For extended periods of time. It's just horrifying to watch her, really. Once in awhile the chipmunk or whatever it is really does get away, though.

I've never seen the old snap traps fail to kill instantly.

Re: Randomness
CX I have seen those snap traps fail to kill instantly and it would make the toughest bad*ss squirm in horror. It's terrible. Alelou yeah kitty is the sweetest little thing. She's only 9 months but she is a lover and honestly thinks the mice are her friends.

Re: Randomness
What brand? The ones we have are Decon. I've actually seen them go off, and they catch them in the neck hard enough to snap it. There's usually a little kicking afterward, but that's reflex action.

Re: Randomness
I don't really know CX. BUT I found out something wonderful today. As most everyone knows my niece died this past week. So any stupid little thing that makes me smile is helpful. Well I'm bot sure if anyone else knows this book series "The Queen's Thief" by Megan Whalen Turner but there is a new book coming out in MARCH. These books are my favorite series EVER! I've been obsessed with them for years. These are not kids books although they are marketed that way, these are deep, insightful, insanely complex stories. The characters and psychological impact is stunning. I'm so happy I'm getting another book.

Re: Randomness
I love Japanese horror movies. There is a modern Japanese Godzilla movie on right now. It's called Godzilla: Final Wars. Right now an IJN (Sorry, it's JMSDF) Aegis destroyer is going at it with Godzilla. They just fired four Harpoon missiles at him. What I really liked was all four missiles popped up right before hitting him. Somebody read the manual.

I saw GI Joe yesterday, it was fine. I really only went for Channing Tatum anyway.
But I wanted The Baroness to die so bad, and she didn't.
