Depends on where you are but where I live, a person who's named or shortens their name to Randy gets some good-natured ribbing. Then again I have a sister name Miranda, and we often call her Randy. So sometimes it is a lot of fun to joke, especially after she got married. ;-)

Beyond fags as cigs, I'm pretty sure faggots are meatballs in England, aren't they?

I always found the term prat amusing. I guess it's sort of a cross between "loser," "jerk" and "dork?" (I don't think I ever totally got that one.)

I remember the very first time I was in Canada, (we go often obviously) I said "This is bloody..." I forget the rest. People just looked at me like a had dropped the f-word. Little did I know in Canada and Britian it's pretty close. I got yelled at by a friend's mom and went crying to my mother. Fortunately my mom was very understanding, after all, we didn't know. Now when I go I remember to watch what I say.

Yes, the same thing happened with my Auntie Nan. She set me straight very quickly!

Apparently she didn't realize it was every other word out of my cousins' mouths once they were off in the pub or something.

Yeah well Lorna (friends mom) didn't want to know that her kids said it, when she wasn't listening either. Some parents are like that.

OOO! ooo! I've got one. Now don't blame me! I didn't do this. My sister tells this story: In high school (United States) she has a foreign exchange student in her grade, named "Thomas." Except he didn't pronounce it like we would pronounce "Thomas" so he was correcting the prononciation:

"Thomas?"

"NO, Domas"

"Thomas?"

"No DOMas"

"Oh, so you want to be called 'Dumb Ass'"

"Yes! Exactly!"

And they did, for the rest of the year. :?

Oh well. Minus the meaning it's a nice name.

I always thought "Samon" would a nice name for a Vulcan, but alas it sounds just like a fish.

Oooh OUCH! Poor Kid. I think Vulcan names are hard to make up. Particularly girl names. I wrack my brains~

I can't even disassociate the fish enough to consider it as a name. Someone wrote an amusing story about Vulcan names, which I'd link except the Library of P'Jem page is giving me nothing. :?

Taking about language misunderstanding: when I read Alelou's remark, I thought: the meaning of Thomas is twin. What's wrong with that meaning? Untill "the penny dropped" (is that an English expression?).
BTW, my last name means "fool" in Japanese. (Hello, I am mrs. Fool and this is my husband, mr. Fool.) We changed our last name a bit when we lived there.

It might be a british expression, I'm not sure. In America we say "until the other shoe drops."

On the fish theme, I think Trout would be a good name for an Andorian male.

Odd expression. Every time I read this expression I have visions of teenagers sneaking into the house, taking off their shoes so the parents don't hear them, until they found Dad on their way and they dropped the shoes. :D
