Just trying to illustrate that Vulcans aren't forbidden to swim or do anything else like that. :dunno:

I am going to chime in one last time to explain why I called the Vulcans regimented. I love Vulcans and find them fascinating, however they had one custom that appalled me. To send your children out into the Forge to survive for ten days seems very hard line to me. I understand the kahs-wan is for their own good but it seems unyielding to me. That is why I said if someone high up decides that all children should swim I would not be surprised if it became mandatory. I never thought for a minute that they didn't embrace culture.

I bet it's by the same logic that Vulcan teenagers learn relativistic topology and non-euclidean geometry

Maybe on Vulcan it's actually non-T'Pludian geometry.

LOL, I am late to this discussion. But I still hold the same opinion that swimming would not be something ALL Vulcan children would be forced to learn.

First, being from a heavy gravity world, I would think their bodies denser and they would not float, or would float further down in the water than humans. They might not be able to float with their heads out of water so they could breathe. They might have to swim harder than humans just to stay afloat.

Second - the rushing stream thing. No way!! Have you ever seen a rushing stream or a flood? Even excellent swimmers cannot handle fast water and would drown. I was a lifeguard and swimming teacher in my younger years and did some scuba diving too. But there are certain situations where I would not attempt to swim as it would be impossible even for the strongest human swimmers, let alone a Vulcan.

I don't know what canon says about oceans or seas on Vulcan, but I got the impression there were only one or two small ones. I don't think Vulcans would think it logical for everyone to know how to swim when drowning would not be a universal hazard on their home world like desert survival dangers would be.

Thanks, Asso for starting this discussion. It is very interesting. :)

Hi Linda
Thanks.
I don't know. You and I have very often the same opinion.

LOL, Asso, I suppose it is logical that we do have similar opinions. You are in a medical profession, my mom was a nurse and my dad was an anesthesiologist. So even though I did not go into a medical field myself, I grew up in that atmosphere.

I'm not sure gravity would be a consideration swimming. As I understand it, Vulcan physiology compensated for that. So while a human (like Trip) could possibly have trouble swimming on Vulcan, a native Vulcan who grew up on planet, might not.

But since both parents are lifeguards, (that how they met) and I grew up in a lot of floods I have to say it's very rare to suvive a flash flood, or rip-tide. But it is possible if you're trained too. I mean coastguard and SEAL's do. But I doubt that's standard traning for Vulcan children.

I think what we have to be careful of is thinking that a Vulcan's body, is identical to a human's. Yeah Asso I know you don't like that. Sorry! ;-)

Judging from a certain Vulcan's body, I'm not sure about that. 8)
