Re: What Kind Of Jewelry Does A Guy Buy A Vulcan?
Who said they were "dirtside when they're married?" They're not going to be dirtside for a while. Anyhow about the size of the rock mentality I HATE IT! But again it's not something I considered. Even if I did want to give T'Pol a honking big rock, it wouldn't have that significance to me.
GO LINDA! Which is why I thought ENT was conspicuous in the lack of bling. Personally I LOVE JEWELRY, but I buy it on my own.

I did. I said "In the 'Aquarium'...", by which I meant to say in MY universe I created for TnT, they will be dirtside when they're married. It didn't have anything to do with how you were conceiving their wedding in your universe. Sorry for the confusion.

Sorry I've never seen you refer to your universe that way.

I get it, but I hadn't seen it before. I find it facinating that V'Lar and Soval weren't very dressed up for their position. Especially since the MO was to make prominent Vulcans very very formal grand and majestic. I wonder why that was.

Maybe the philosophers of the High Command were the Puritans of Vulcans. Though it could be that I have Puritans on the brain since that's where we are in one of my classes...

Well according to the Vulcan Arc the VHC was overrun by Rommies, and while Rommies are slightly more austier than their cousins the do believe in bling! In fact they have marriage bracelets. Hmm... I wonder what the rational was for V'Lar having an ugly robe while Soval had beautiful ones?

V'Lar was characterized as being spartan. So it makes sense that she has a rather simple and drab robe.

Didn't make it less ugly. I came up with a pretty piece of jewlery for T'Pol to recieve as an "I'm an idiot Sweetheart, and I'm sorry" gift. I'll introduce it in my karaoke fic.

Re: What Kind Of Jewelry Does A Guy Buy A Vulcan?
One of the things that I keep thinking about in this story is that in a world where we are traveling to other worlds - which gems are valuable and whether they are big or small - will probably have no meaning. Right now, you can buy a manufactured diamond relatively inexpensively that only a jeweler would be able to recognize is not a mined diamond.
But what if there is a kind of jewel that's preciousness is based in its small size rather than large size? That might not be practical or logical for adornment, but it could easily happen.
In 150 years, my guess is most Earth gems will be able to be manufactured. So, value or interest will be placed on more exotic gems. I wrote a story where Malcolm gave Hoshi a ring with a red stone from Mars. With all the different planets, inhabited and uninhabited, there's endless possibilities that could exist.
I think a Vulcan would not care a whit for the monetary value of a stone, but she would be impressed by the specialness of it. Especially if there was something aesthetically logical about the stone.

? What does this mean? It's very symmetrical? It could be used to aim a laser in a pinch? It matches up perfectly to "Surak's Essential Rubric of Jewelry Aesthetics"?
Hmmm...
The stone exhibits no distracting irregularities
The cut and polish are flawless
The stone conducts and reflects light with less than a 99.99% variance
The piece did not require excessive wealth, labor, or environmental degradation to acquire
The stone's acquisition does not reflect illogical priorities in one's family history
The metallurgy of the setting meets high standards for purity
The design, if original, does not suggest illogical or sentimental emotions (heart shapes are right out)
The design, if traditional, honors those parts of Vulcan history that honor Vulcan (no raptors!)
The color enhances, rather than detracts from, the healthy appearance of one's skin
The piece does not draw undue attention to itself or its wearer
The piece does not provide distracting or dangerous powers to the wearer, i.e. invisibility or supreme power
OMG, ANOTHER new chapter! NORTH STAR Chapter 28

Re: What Kind Of Jewelry Does A Guy Buy A Vulcan?
Awesome list. Alelou. My poor brain was too tired to actually suggest what principles would be aesthetically logical.
And heart shapes would be out - not only because they are emotive, the Vulcan symbology for a heart would be different.
And another question would be - what color stones would Vulcans find aesthetically or symbolically pleasing?
Would they value green stones because they represent lifeblood and red because they reflect the sky of Vulcan? Or would they simply prefer a stone that enhances the skin tone of the wearer?
Although, I do believe as long as she found it aesthetically logical, T'Pol would wear a human style ring if Trip gave it to her. It would be logical to please one's mate that way.

OMG I post one little topic about nothing and people have found a million different things to say about it! Things that even I in my very active imagination couldn't even begin to come up with. Cool!
Alelou since you've had such experience with Trek particularly TNG I'm not sure why you're so concerned with the logic of jewelry. Um since TOS they've always piled it on. I don't know if you remember the TNG episode Unification part one, but Sarek's wife Perrin piled the stuff on just to beam aboard Ent-D and pick up Picard. Yes Perrin was human but her bling was Vulcan. Old T'Pau piled the bling on, T'Lar and the priestesses in Search For Spock were covered in it. Sarek rocked the bling many times, both at formal and casual events. I don't see the issue.
Maybe jewelery is just an art form to Vulcans and they appreciate it.
As for the value of metals and stones. I think that it would be subjective to where you are at the time. What may be valuable on one world might be worthless on another. Anyway maybe our economics expert JT might help with that.

Re: What Kind Of Jewelry Does A Guy Buy A Vulcan?
It was me who actually suggested Vulcans would want their jewelry to be aesthetically logical. Vulcans value beauty, but I've always thought that their art, music, architecture and fashion would be aesthetically logical in its beauty. Symmetrical. Balanced. Or following some other specifically logical pattern. I don't think they'd care for Van Gogh paintings - too chaotic. But they'd appreciate Picasso's cubism because they'd immediately get what he was up to and find it logical. They'd appreciate Mondrian but not Pollack. (Unless, like T'Pol and jazz music, they are exploring.)

Re: What Kind Of Jewelry Does A Guy Buy A Vulcan?
Sorry Honeybee, I knew it was you who brought it up. I liked your points, but for the life of me I didn't get the list Alelou thought up. See I don't think logic is all that rigid, hence my assertion that T'Pol isn't a rebel. I believe Surak's teachings and priciples of logic are what guides a Vulcan in making choices, but what they choose is based on their own individual understanding and use of logic. Kind of like most religion. The Vulcans of the ENT era tried to do away with IDIC. Something that was the basis of Surak's teachings. Therefore they were not following his path of logic.
So my point is I don't think Vulcans as a society would be opposed to different art forms. Art by its very nature is subjective. Would some art be personally and culturally offensive? Sure. Does that mean a Vulcan is idealogically banned from liking Jackson Pollack, or wearing a heart? No I personally don't think so. Spock loved many different artists and forms of art.
