For the most part, yeah. In my version of the bond, they generally don't see one another in the whitespace anymore since that was something that happens when a mated pair are first bonded and just getting used to the mental connection. As they become more accustomed to one another and closer (emotionally), the need for this mental construct becomes unnecessary. They become, for lack of a better word, one while remaining distinct individuals. They can communicate with one another, but words aren't necessary any longer. Effectively, they communicate at the speed of thought, so in the span of a second, they could have hashed out an effective course of action. Dreaming is, obviously, an exception to that...

I suppose that, if absolutely necessary, one or the other could force a sentence or word into the thoughts of the other.

As to the disagreement thing, I also established that the bond serves as the ultimate arbiter between them and works to bring them back into balance. If, for example, Trip did something monumentally stupid that really, really pissed T'Pol off, every time she thought about how annoyed she was, the bond would deluge her with memories of the times with her mate that she cherished, thus making it virtually impossible to remain pissed off at him. That's my way of explaining why Trip was able to forgive T'Pol so readily and easily after she treated him so poorly in season 4.

Distance is, as you say, a factor. I haven't quite figured out the full extent of it yet, but the farther away they are from one another, the less they can sense the other. It's probable that, even with the massive distances involved, either could close their eyes and point in the exact direction that their mate is in...

If Trip wasn't "adjusted", this would all be mostly one-sided as direct tactile contact would be necessary for him to have the same benefits that a Vulcan partner has. T'Pol wouldn't lose contact sensitivity, but Trip wouldn't have the same connection that she has with him unless they were touching or both were in a meditative state...

I like what you said about the bond not being a 'mental telephone.' When I write it as such, what I am trying to convey is that such an exchange is happening much faster than it actually would verbally. However, I think you do a better job of it than I do.

I also like that T'Pol still has her pet micro-singularities project. It reinforces that, although she's an effective wartime commander, she is at heart a scientist.

I do have one small area that doesn't make sense, and maybe with an explanation of the military structure I'd get it: it seems to me that T'Pol is doing all of the work Trip should be doing as captain. Actually, it seems like she as the XO has more work than he does as captain. I understand she's trying to help him, but I'm confused. Is he doing anything she isn't, aside from battle decisions?

It may look that way, but that's not the case. The duties of the XO are generally the routine, day-to-day stuff which frees up the CO for tactical planning & other "big picture" stuff. The way I'm approaching it, T'Pol is basically creating the personnel stuff (the duty roster, etc.) while Trip is instructing the department heads to focus on this or that. He tells them what he wants done and leaves it to them and T'Pol how they accomplish it. All status reports come to him, and requisitions for parts/personnel/etc. have to be approved by him. He's expected to know how every part of his ship is running, so he's moving around a lot, discussing stuff with the department heads, listening to suggestions about improvements, etc.

Throw in the fact that T'Pol, by dint of being a Vulcan, doesn't require as much sleep as Trip does, and she simply has more time to take care of the paperwork. Plus, she simply has better focus and is able to get through said paperwork more quickly. How do you think Archer managed it? He dumped everything that he didn't want to do onto T'Pol. Cool

In a situation where Trip needs her as science officer more than XO, he shoulders the CO & XO duties, thus freeing her up to focus on the Science! aspect.

Unstated in this particular scenario (maybe I should have mentioned it) is that Trip has been in Engineering helping Hess get Endeavour fully back to 100%. Thus, T'Pol went over the reports and indicated which ones she knew Trip needed to read, and which ones he didn't. Normally, he's supposed to read each and every one of them...

A well known leadership technique is referred to as MBWA (Managing By Wandering Around). It was promoted and practiced by Dave Packard and to a lesser extent Bill Hewlett.

They would leave their offices and only let their secretary know where they were. Often they individually would visit some division and wander in the shipping/receiving door. After working their way through the site talking with just about anyone they came across they would then visit with the management.

I could see Archer using this technique and to a different extent Trip. Making sure not to undercut his officers but keeping in touch with the enlisted types and making sure the officers were doing the job

This could help mimimize the need for as many group meetings as a non-involved leader would require as he would have a feel for what is going on around the ship.

Surprised Rigil that's ending with D'derix and the Xindi Reptillian is ominous as to another attack planned on Earth they seem determined to conquer or destroy Humanity at any cost t0 get rid of Starfleet since they want to conquer other planets and their resources.I hope Medea will reveal who some of the traitors are at Starfleet.

I hope the humanoid Xindi kept back some crucial details about that thing...

Shock You had better mean you're done for now. Whoa.

Now the CO/XO roles make more sense. Thanks. I can also see Trip helping Hess and rather enjoying it.

Very cool as all your Romulan scenes are! Cool

Given all this internal strife and assassination attempts, one wonders how the Romulans manage to stay a unified force capable of waging war against others.

I have to ask, you stated that the Reman guards were inside D'deridex's cabin and that he hardly thought of them. Does that mean they were there, in plain sight, when he and S'enrae were doing... well, you know!? Twisted Evil

One would wonder...

I was wondering if anyone would catch that. The answer is yes. The Remans are, after all, not seen as actual ... people. They're less than people, and can be ignored like furniture.

Up at Fanfiction.net for those of you who prefer it there although I highly recommend you use my personal site for the Teaser. Some of the formatting didn't translate well at fanfiction.

Also, don't expect me to update this one quite as quickly. I'm trying to get some work done on a long, long overdue Foundations episode. I just wanted to put this experimental teaser out there...

I actually expect it'll be a "I love it" or an "I hate it" type of reaction. An entire scene of something like this would be impossible to read, but I think it works as a teaser...

Me too. I also think it works having the operative named, and I like the warning about needing level 12 security clearance. This is all very ominous. Are you sure you're not using Foundations as an excuse to leave us hanging at this exact spot? Wink

A couple of things I noticed:
Pict-source focuses on subject (2) for 0.5 seconds.
All the other times were in Romulan/Rihannsu time, but this one is in seconds. Also, are we to assume they don't know Hoshi married Malcolm and took his last name in addition to Sato? That seems like something they might know, since they know so much otherwise.

Anyway, I love this, except the part where there's mortal danger for Archer/Hoshi/Gannet/Gardener, which I sort of love to hate. (As much sense as that makes, right?) The visual it's created in my head is powerful.

I wish that were the case. The episode that I'm working on is simply not cooperating, which is frustrating the heck out of me.

All the other times were in Romulan/Rihannsu time, but this one is in seconds.

Whoops. Fixed.

Also, are we to assume they don't know Hoshi married Malcolm and took his last name in addition to Sato? That seems like something they might know, since they know so much otherwise.

I toyed around with that, actually, and decided that they didn't find that important (her "married" name.)
