Re: Does Trip have much of an accent?
Amen. That's why it get's me when Trip is written speaking well to quote Dis like a hick. Because most hicks I know do know how to speak well, it's just in certain situations they choose not too. Most of the time Trip chooses to speak very well. I have no doubt if he wanted to he could and would lay it on thick, but I've never seen him do so on the show. Even at his most stressed out and emotional. And yeah even drunk. Malcolm was far more into his accent and slurry than Trip.

I read in an interview once that Connor just went for what he thought a "hick" sounded like, because there were a lot of them near where he's from.
jT--I agree, Trip sounds like a lot of astronauts and pilots.

IDK I know some pilots because my uncle flew for the Navy. They didn't sound like Trip.

Maybe CT just saves up good answers and applies them randomly to convention questions (see what he said to Ann). Maybe he considers this his own personal revenge on people who actually pay attention to such matters...

David Boreanaz does it to Bones fans constantly. I really feel bad for actors accosted by fans demanding things that they probably have very little to do with. Especially when some fans are overly enthusiastic. I mean there should be some limits. These are people too. I mean I'd screw with fans heads if I was a Trek actor. I would.

Re: Does Trip have much of an accent?
Trip sounding like an astronaut? But why do (or did) astronauts sound like that? Maybe because most of the early astronauts were from the Midwest or the South, where many test pilots and military men came from. I think it was in The Right Stuff I read that men from rural areas were more inclined than men from coastal cities to join the military and then become astronauts/test pilots. Probably still true to some extent today even if the profession has diversified (pilots, mission specialists etc.)
She's got an awfully nice bum!

I think that astronauts and Houston, Texas will forever be associated in the American mind. And if you're in Houston you've got a drawl. It's inevitable. I don't normally have much of a southern accent, but put me in the same room with my cousins from Houston and in about five minutes I start sounding like grits and gravy.

Between Texas, Huntsville, and Florida, I think a lot of NASA people are gonna drawl even if they didn't start out that way.
Re: Does Trip have much of an accent?
This displaced Houstonian agrees. Almost all astronauts have some kind of drawl. And they are based in Houston.
Trip's accent, which with the exception of a couple of early episodes, I never found too strong - sounds exactly like the astronauts and other NASA workers that I have met. These people live their whole careers in Houston - and the Gulf Coast drawl has a few variances - but Trip is definitely gulf coast.

Re: Does Trip have much of an accent?
I couldn't belive the drawl and the y'all in Texas. It was so strong, and something I'd only heard on TV, that I felt like they were almost putting it on for my benefit. (They weren't, obviously.)
I even noticed Dis and Elessar's accents quite a bit with their 'baay-zil' and so forth. We say 'bazzle' (for basil). And when I was at the main desk, the 3 girls there were all kind of laughing and saying they didn't ever watch Star Trek. And I laughingly said something like, "Oh no, do you all hate Star Trek?" And they laughed and imitated me saying "you all" and explained 'it's "Y'ALL".'

Re: Does Trip have much of an accent?
Distracted has a totally adorable accent. No one else I've met from the site has any accent at all.
Yes, I know. It's all perspective. The first time I called Elessar to make arrangements for a con he sounded like he doubted I was who I said I was, saying I sounded just like Y2Kelly (another Pittsburgher). I said, yeah well that would make sense.
Of course, from YouTubes I beleive that enterprikayak has a strong Canadian accent, which means she enunciates clearly and and sentences end up instead of down.

JT, you have an accent when we talk on the phone. I have heard too damned may different accents over the years in different countries that when I came back to the US my ear was no longer attuned to the accents here. Nevertheless, JT, no mistaking yours.

Re: Does Trip have much of an accent?
I didn't think I had an accent - until I was in Mexico and someone came walking up from behind me and said "Hey, Chicago!"
I couldn't figure that out......
I think Trip's accent becomes a little more authentic as the series went on.

Re: Does Trip have much of an accent?
Oh well I didn't equate Trip automatically with Astronauts. But I just dig his accent anyway. It's comforting. All of my brothers have the drawl down here. And I love them. Besides everything about Trip is hot. Not as hot as Robbie McNeill but a very close second. Almost too close to call.

Re: Does Trip have much of an accent?
When I went to England everyone kept assuming my ex and I were from Canada. Granted Windsor is just across the river from Detroit so I guess there's bound to be similarities, but to me it's the Yoopers who really sound Canadian, not those of us in the mitten.
