Try to keep a friendship when the both of you transfer halfway around the world from one another and you may not meet again for 20 years. No Cell phones, IPods, Internet. Nothing but Snail Mail. On occasion when one is back at the State Department in the FS lounge there is a book that people sign telling whre their next assignent is. Over the years one can keep track of a person that way. There are peoplle that I am in contat with now that we are Retired that Ihad not seen in years. Also, read the Obit section of a site that lists who has died recently. Only way I know what has hapened to some.

My Daugher hated it. she would attend a school for two years and have to move leaving behind friends that she likked very much and might not ever see again. She wanted nothing more than to stay in once place and never move again. I couldn't do it.

You are lucky that you had friendships that lasted for years and the person was near you.
I am Retired. Having a good time IS my job

Except for a year and a half of high school, we actually DIDN'T live in the same town. We went to the same local university, but I don't think we were ever there at the same time, except when visiting each other. Hell, we were also both in England for a year, but not the same year. We've done quite a lot of long-distance visiting over the years to our various locations.

As a journalism brat I had to move constantly. My parents were nomads. Sometimes, if my dad hadn't changed newspapers yet, they'd just up and move school districts in order to buy a different house. They were nightmares that way. And since in Florida many of my friends were military brats or Honeywell transfers or whatever, there was a lot of snail mail involved in staying friends. Some lasted for years before dying out; others faded quickly; some have lasted all this time.

Oddly enough, email hasn't really helped me keep in touch with most of the friends from those days. It's still letters and cards, and the occasional phone call or visit. Not one of them is online to the extent I am -- or at least not with me.

Stupid things I have done in the last three days:

--Cut myself in the dishpan on a knife that I already went to the ER once after cutting myself on.
--Reopened said cut during class, requiring me to lead a discussion with a wad of paper wrapped around my finger.
-- Left class and realized twenty minutes later that I'd left my regular shoes there.
-- Got home and discovered one dangly earring missing.
-- Got ready for bed the next night and discovered I had been wearing TWO DIFFERENT dangly earrings all day.
-- Left the garage door open overnight because I hadn't pulled the car in all the way and had told myself I'd go back out and do it AFTER we ate the pizza.
-- Re-opened that cut again just trying to put two binders in my case for school this morning.
-- Burned two loaves of limpa bread I made two days after burning the FIRST loaf of limpa bread I made.
-- Tried to toast a slice of said limpa bread, but set the timer for 20 minutes instead of putting the dial on "light" for toast, so it REALLY turned to carbon and filled the house with smoke.
-- Got two packets of sugar for my coffee at the coffee stand (yeah, so much for my attempt to give up sugar) and carefully poured them both into the trash instead of my coffee.
-- Carefully returned my bottles for deposit at the grocery store, only to discover I no longer had the receipt when I got to the register.

I think I should definitely stay away from any chain saws for the rest of the week, don't you?

LOL! Sorry . . . I feel so superior because I know better than to own any sharp knives--having done just what you did so many times.

I think things will be looking up for you soon, Alelou, because chances must be less than .000000001 :vulcan: that you could possibly have two days in a row as bad as you just described.

Try not to be so hard on yourself, Alelou. I once walked around the Sand Lake Summerfest for nearly a half an hour with a roll of toilet paper tucked under my arm. I'd been helping Abby in the restroom and forgot it was there. I couldn't understand why I was getting all of the odd looks.

Made coffee with no pot at work.
Left the drive-thru once without the food.
This past weekend I ventured into the city with the girls for a birthday party. I was so concerned about having my Josh Groban CDs to relax me on the highway that I forgot my wallet.
Once I threw a pair of shears in my leg after imagining being stung by a bee. Then I almost passed out.
Shopping with no money.
Drove away with my wallet on the hood of the car.
Took my daughter's sneakers to work a few weeks ago, thinking they were my own. (Never get dressed in the dark)
Once went to the car on my way to work with a pile of laundry in my arms.
Put my 8 year old daughter's underwear in my son's pile of clothes.
Speaking of my son, last year he ran into a tree while playing frisbee and broke his nose. 23 stitches...Apparently this type of thing runs in the family.

I could go on and on...

Give yourself a break. Stuff happens. (Especially when you get over 40)

I'm so glad I'm not the only Klutz around here!

The week before last I hit a parked car. Just a fender bender, but boy did I feel like a moron.

Yes, yes, I know, but I'm feeling way more over 40 this week. (That is a pretty impressive list, though! LOL)

And as of tonight, you can add to my list dropping a jar of mayonannaise, which opened... Oh yeah, and I forgot that last night I was shaking up some salad dressing I'd just made and the pop top lid thingie came loose so I spattered the kitchen...

Must go to bed soon and hope tomorrow will be better.

OK, I've got you all beat. Once drove off to take the babies to day care and forgot . . . the babies. :? I only noticed when halfway there when I went through the bank drive through (they knew me there) and they asked how many lollypops I needed. I looked in the back of the car and screamed. Luckily my husband happened to be home and saw me drive off and stayed home waiting with the babies. Then there is the time in college I was ironing while chatting with my roommate's boyfriend and absentmindedly took off my shirt so I could iron it, still talking a mile a minute to the guy. (Ever have that dream where you find yourself out in public in your underwear. LOL . . . )

My reaction, in true "reader response" style:

She robbed a dime store?

then

No, wait.... she hit a dime store with her CAR. That must be it.

then

So did she do it just now or is this part of a list of stupid things we have done in the past?

finally

Are there any dime stores anymore? Aren't they all at least dollar stores now?

LOL I was 18 and I'd run into town after school. The parking lot was this little postage stamp behind the dime store, about 8 spots of angled parking along a one-way aisle. When I came out of wherever I was, a semi making a delivery to the dime store was blocking the way out. I was in a hurry--maybe I wasn't supposed to take the car without my mom home, I don't remember. So I had to figure out how to bank out and turn around in this tight space so I could go out the in. I was watching the semi, so afraid I'd hit that, I wasn't watching the other side and hit the building instead. I wasn't going fast so no real damage, but a chunk of the building got fused to the bumper. The way we parked at home, Mom never was until like six months later and she comes into the house and asks me what I hit. It had been so long since I"d thought about it that my look of confusion was genuine when I asked her what she was talking about, and when she showed me I said I didn't know, someone must've done it in the parking lot at school. U don't know if she bought it, but she dropped it there.
