Re: You know you're a Trek fan when . . .
Seeing Linda's pictures of Jim Lovell reminded me of a "You know you're a Trek fan when . . ." story, though it is kind of old. Of course we had that movie Apollo 13 and watched it like 5 to 10 times when the kids were little. I was babysitting my niece and watching my three boys who were all between the ages of 2nd and 4th grade (about). They were done playing all wanted to watch a movie. So I go, "How about Apollo 13" My neice goes, No. I say, "What kind of video do you want to watch?"
"Something without the word "star" in it."
lol . . . See we had [i]Star Wars, Star Trek, and some astromony videos. MOST of our videos had the word "Star" in the title, lol . . .

LOL, all your DVDs with Star in it! That is cool, JT. I just remembered that Jim Lovell said the movie Apollo 13 was very accurate, even the stuff about his home life at the time, although there was some time compression with some of the scenes. But time compression is necessary when you only have about two hours to tell the story, don't you think? I don't have the DVD of Apollo 13, but you can bet I'm going to pick up a copy now! I do have a copy of Jim Lovell's book "Lost Moon" (autographed)

Working on a major fan fic project. Two-thirds done. Hope to put it up in the not TOO distant future.

Did you know that Jim Lovell had a cameo in the movie as the Captain of the naval vessel that met the astronauts. Tom Hanks offered him the role as a welcoming Admiral but Lovell said he could be the Captain instead. All he had to do was dust out his old uniform and put it on.
She's got an awfully nice bum!

I didn't know that until he mentioned that at the picnic and I forgot to mention it. And his wife had a cameo too, I think he said, but I was not real close to him when he said that so I didn't hear him real well. He said his wife played a cousin or an aunt or something. If anyone has a copy of the movie, can you check to see if his wife also was in it? That is why I want my own copy of the movie! To see him in it and to refresh on all the details of the mission. Well, I could reread his book too, duh.

The bedroom you leave behind when you go off to a war you won't survive includes a bathleth...
(It's photo #10. That is what that is, isn't it?)

Also a Lord of the Rings poster and a Martrix poster. I don't know who is in the poster above the bathleth. It looks like Connor Trinneer, but it couldn't be. Oh that's heartbreaking.

Because its has the stargate and is obviously not Richard Dean Anderson, my guess is Ben Browder (Farscape)

Oh, that broke my heart. I'm working at the USO Monday. I'll give extra hugs to our soldiers.
On a lighter note, I showed my husband how to kiss like a Vulcan last time he had a cold. (I didn't want to get sick). He went along with my geeky idea.
Our first date was to see the "Wrath of Khan."

You ARE a Trek fan.
I may be wrong, but I suspect a Vulcan finger tip touch might actually be more likely to transmit a cold virus than lip to lip contact -- if only because it's harder to put your lips in your own nose or eyes....

Re: You know you're a Trek fan when . . .
My husband is a mild Trekkie. He was a HUGE Next Generation fan, but never liked Enterprise. He never gave it a chance, much like me the first time through.
He is accompanying me to our first Star Trek Con in October. In all these years I've never been to a Star Trek Con. Either because of the time or money, so this should be interesting. I've been to a Stargate Con (in Chicago last year and met Connor!), a Comicon, a Fantasy Con, several Ainme central Cons, and even a Beetlefest but it's NUTS that a life long fan as crazy as myself has never been to an official con. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

I went for academic advising in the Communication and Theater Arts department today. Didn't know who my adviser was. He's nice...but his office mate is a huge Trekkie because he had all this Starfleet stuff all over his bulletin board by his desk!!! The professor who's advising me is cool, but I couldn't help thinking "Why couldn't I get THAT guy???"

Oh you'll enjoy it. I remember my first 25 years ago. The sight of a drunk Shatner will never ever leave my brain, dammit.
Hubbie is a Dr. Who fan. Trek isn't his cup of tea.
darnit.

Re: You know you're a Trek fan when . . .
I could...but Dr. Cooper is nice. And I think I impressed him a little. When I stopped into the office the first time time this morning, it was actually his office mate's hours, and they hadn't told me at the desk that I needed to be assigned an adviser. Dr. Cooper had a few minutes to answer some general questions before leaving, and when I pulled out my old transcript from 20 years ago he said I was more prepared for this short meeting than most of his students in the class he was about to teach. He was also impressed that I'm back after 20 years...though I still have trouble hearing that, as I still can't help feeling it's a little *unimpressive* that I didn't get this right the first time.
Any way, I look at it this way: when I have occasion to come to Dr. Cooper's office, I still get to look at the other guy's stuff any way!

Re: You know you're a Trek fan when . . .
Well, I know I've already said this a gazillion times, but an older student who know what she's there for is a treasure to every professor I've ever met. You have no idea how much you affect the whole class in a positive way.
