Anything can be funny--as long as it's in the right context, and for the right audience.

Some sitcoms I don't care for, but others are very, very funny. And, since so many are popular for so long, it's obviously resonating with *somebody*--a lot of somebodys, as a matter of fact. Enough that a network would renew it because it's attracting enough viewers to generate Big Cash Sponsor Dollars. I could never just dismiss a popular show because I don't like it; rather, I try to figure out what it is about people and the social condition that makes it attractive. If you understand the people watching it, generally you can understand the show...or, sometimes the reverse is true, and if you can figure out the show, you can figure out the viewers.

I have an irreverent sense of humor sometimes, and I love those Adult Swim-type cartoons...but one I could never figure out is Aqua Teen Hunger Force. People rave about it, but I'm perplexed. One of my clients--a really conservative older guy who I never thought would be the "type" to watch it--said he didn't like it for the longest time, either, but he kept getting exposed to it through his stepdaughters, and one day it just clicked and now he thinks it's hilarious. I haven't had time to devote to further experimentation yet, but I promised him one day I would sit down and watch it--a lot--and see if it likewise clicked for me. Maybe some things are like that, you just have to give them enough of a chance or something. I don't know.

Somewhat unrelated, I noticed that a lot of people are talking about writing the "funny parts" of stories. Even the most serious dramas benefit from a little humor to break the tension. However, the process for that vs. actually writing "a comedy" is a little different, I think. The difference is expectation. The humor woven into a drama is the tension-breaker or the unexpected surprise treat. When one sits down to read a comedy, one expects it to be funny pretty much nonstop, so it's a little more pressure. Not all forms of humor are for everyone, nor are they appropriate to every situation, but generally having a good idea of what "most people" will laugh at is a good start.

panyasan--Thank you. And I LOVE the new word. 8) I will do my best to continue to bring you the ridiculous and funny. In addition to "Body and Katra," I promise you "Sex, Lies, and Petty Arson" before I go back to school next fall.

Well to me humor is extremely individual. That's why I don't expect lots of people to think I'm funny. But I think the important to write what anyone as an individual finds funny. If the author doesn't find what they're writing funny because they're trying to be main stream then it just won't work for anyone.

Well time for me to chime in. I also want to thank you panyasan for the mention of my story.

'In A Funhouse Mirror Darkly' was the story that I fretted over the most of anything I have written. Situational comedy in a larger piece is much easier than writing something that is labeled a comedy. I really sweated that one until I started getting your feed back here. I have toyed with the idea of a sequel but wondered if I want to put myself through that again

As I said before comedy is so subjective that you are never going to make everyone laugh.

Personally, I'm wanting to see a sequel to this one. That MU comedy was brilliant. I go back and re-read it when I need a mood-lifter. :D

No. Not everyone is going to like every kind of humor. I was busy writing my serious MU fic when you did yours, Bluetiger, and it totally captivated me!

But I hear you Aquarius. I had Malcolm and Hoshi fall in love in FS to add the comic relief - TnT were so serious and already bonded in that story - that two people falling in love add a touch of lightness that the story needed, then when things got lighter for TnT, things got serious for Malcolm & Hoshi. It was very fluid.

The closest thing I've ever written to straight comedy was Aquarius's challenge fic "A Kiss at Midnight" - but I set out to make it sexy - and then it turned funny and hopefully sexy. It kind of had the rom com "cultural misunderstanding" thing going. That's challenging because you had to believe T'Pol would make a big deal out of something that was obviously nothing - and find humor in that.

But I originally had her wearing mistletoe in her hair without knowing what it was - but then I thought - no - somebody would enlighten her. Plus, I didn't want humor at her expense. So, I thought was sort of deadpan funny that she did that on purpose.

Praise from you, Aquarius and Honeybee, is greatly appreciated. Maybe I will put a sequel on the old drawing board :D

I think you should. A string of MU comedy shorts like that. You're sitting on a comedy goldmine there.

I am happy you choose to write it in this way - I really liked the fact she did it on purpose. I like to think T'Pol has this playfull, witty streak in her. :D

I totally agree that T'Pol has a playful, witty streak. And the fact that she chose to do it makes it much funnier, rather than the more obvious original idea. Thanks for enjoying it. :)

^ The best evidence of T'Pol's sense of humor: the infamous deleted scene from "Unexpected," when she's screwing with Trip HARD and taunts him about sausages until he pukes!!! :guffaw:

You know what they say--you always hurt the ones you love. ;-)

Any way, honeybee, I liked the mistletoe thing a lot, too, and was wondering if we were going to see T'Pol's sense of humor at that magnitude in one of your fics again any time soon?

I need to get back the RU - where we can see T'Pol's sense of humor and wit!

I've got to finish the MU before diving into a long RU story again.

But if I can think of a short RU story that shows off T'Pol's wit - I'll write it. ;)

Guys, I'm in serious need of encouragement and hand-holding here...

I'm seriously considering not sharing my writing or art. I know I shouldn't take some criticism personally---you can't satisfy everyone, and everyone's a critic---but I'm getting extremely tired of being picked apart. I've got (had?) some ideas on how to deal with some unbelievable(?) details in my current story (and I have another completely different one I'm working on, too, a Hoshi-centric one on ff.net) but even before I can "explain", so to speak, I feel like I have to defend myself. :censored: :banghead:

I got a message about my Star Trek art on my Deviant Art account: "You draw like an elementary school student, a bad one." :wtf: :wtf: I draw because I like to!

I don't need this crap. I know I'll get over this, but right now, I feel like I have an open wound and people just want to rub salt in it. I'm going to eat lots of chocolate now...

Thanks for listening to me vent.

Oh dear!

Don't be discouraged! Some of us enjoy your writing - and you are right, you can't please all the people all the time. We all find that out from time to time!

Don't rob those of us who do enjoy your work for the sake of those who don't and feel they need to un-constructively tell you so!

Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four

And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.
