Yes, Phily. One Temple student was murdered right before the school year started, though he was not near Temple University itself when this happened. He was in a park in a relatively "good" neighborhood of Phily, if I remember correctly. But similar sort of thing: some bum came up and demanded money and the victim was a foreign student and didn't understand, so he didn't respond, so the criminal shot him.

Spending this beautiful day reading about death, dying, and bereavement. Writing essay on same topic. Beer and plenty of Comedy Central to follow, lest I end up down in the dumps and stay there. :'(

My whine is that I just found out I have jury duty in two weeks. THIS will be interesting, since school is still in session. Thankfully it's probably the most convenient week of the year to miss since they'll all be busy with research projects or studying for finals. Thank God I have my courses up on the web, too.

Wow, that would be potentially stressful. I'm glad you have your classes up on the web. I think you can get out of it by stating that your students need you, but maybe not. BEWARE of free legal advice. idk . . .

Clark's Creek wilderness area (Mississippi) is fun to hike with a group of 12 year old girls in the rain... until the point when your boots slip in the wet clay as you're hanging on to a root with one hand going over a boulder and you feel this peculiar "snap" in your wrist. Not so much fun after that.

Did you know that when you have a radial head fracture your wrist turns all sorts of lovely shades of purple and green and it hurts like hell to write? At least mine does. And I write all day. With my left hand. Which is, of course, the wrist that's broken. Joy.

OH NO! I sprained my left shoulder two weeks ago and even though I'm mostly right-handed it's hard to manage. I can't imagine breaking my dominant hand's wrist. Hope you heal quickly!

I can imagine the pain, somewhat, since I managed to hairline fracture three fingers on a hand once and it hurt like hell AND was impressively swollen and purple. Plus I really realized oh boy that we use our hands a lot. (And that wasn't even the hand I wrote with.)

Does a radial fracture heal quickly (I hope?)

About 4 to 6 weeks if I'm a good girl and stop using it. Unfortunately, I'm REALLY left-handed, so I can't be that good.

I'm wearing the splint, though. I hate it, but I'm wearing it. At least the ortho says that as long as I don't crunch the head of my radius any more than it's already been crunched I won't need pins in it. But he compared the consistency of my radial head to balsa wood and told me he was going to xray it again in a week to see if it "slips".

I guess it's time for a bone density test.

That's a long recovery. And yes, balsa wood is not what you want.
