Understandable, Elessar, that you are listening rather than reading. And there is a large variety of books on CD now, even in the unabridged form. Don't strain your eyes, even if you can read again now. Take it easy on the reading and let your eyes heal.

I might take a look at Transformers movie if it is convenient, or the grandkids want to see it - just so I can understand Rigil better, LOL. But I like a film with varied pacing. It must be my age, I guess.

Hey, I just reread parts of that an hour ago. I got a little distracted while "organizing" my books. Organizing in a loose sense, not alphabetical or anything. I didn't think the Torres subplot was good. I can appreciate what the point was, but I think, especially at the end of the two books, it was into out-of-character land.

I also rediscovered my Star Trek Aliens and Artifacts book. It doesn't have any ENT, but there are cool pictures, anecdotes, and quotes. Also, it has instructions on how to make yourself up as Data and, for the mechanically inclined, how to make a dermal regenerator. It's neat, though, because they talk about how some of the props are made. I've also started How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth, but that probably won't interest people as much as the fact that there's a diagram of the "Star Trek Sideburn Bible" in Aliens and Artifacts.

Really? That's interesting... I didn't really find the Torres subplot out of character... idk why... I mean she always had a bit of a disdain for her Klingon side but I think the notion the book tries to push is that the feelings roused by the possibility of seeing her mother again is stronger and overrides all that made-fun-of-in-childhood-driven angst and shame of being Klingon.

Tell you what irritates me is that I'm noticing in the dialog people talking in a different way than I would imagine. Like, in narrative you sometimes use clever or obscure synonyms of something else you just said to stay varied, which is fine, but there are only a few people (like Picard) who would actually use the word "chagrin" in a sentence. Anyway, I actually JUST finished that book. I think I read it in two sittings!

I have a lot of free time on my hands... Actually, if I had the money to buy it, I'd consider ordering a language book. I just decided that I think I'd like to learn Russian, Arabic, and/or Farsi. I think it'd help, once I get into the Marines, to bolster my application for the unit assignment I desire for my 2nd-or-later tour : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recon_Marines

Actually, a lot of Trek novelists do. I think the only two writers I like is Peter David and Diane Carey.

I like Diane Carey. I have not read much by Peter David...yet. The Reeves-Stevens couple are fast becoming my favorites, though. I am reading some of their non-trek stuff. They also write non-fiction science, so they have much credibility with me.

Listening: Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man

reading: Several hours ago I finished "Farther Shore", the sequel to Homecoming. SPOILERS AHEAD!! I have to say, there's one repeat aspect that I was continually disatisfied with. It's something that occurs repeatedly in star trek but it was RAMPANT and BLATANT in this one... Unrealistic emotional flexibility and loviness in people! Janeway having a good time warming up to her former fiance's NEW WIFE. The DAY she gets BACK. B'Elanna jumping to wanting to live on Boreth. I really felt for Tom. I maen how the f*** do you respond to that? She's like begging him, her mother just died, she looks like shit, but it's moving to a weird ass Klingon sanctuary. Gimme a break, that'd last.

The other thing was Miral dying. Eesh, talk about PREDICTABLE but in predictable in the really sickening way where you see it coming but you really hope that you DON'T see it coming because it will be so very lame. I mean the whole thing about how Star Trek never changes the status quo but then leaves the changes IN there to be dealt with. Torres thought her mom was dead... her mom turns out to be alive, huge change. Oh but sorry, she dies in the retarded death throws of some stupid animal she must have fought off 50 times since she's been in the Wilderness for something like 6 YEARS, when it's apparently a huge feat just to survive ONE year there. Convenient death to preserve status quo = contrived. Writing the interactions of her estranged father and how her mother fit into her new life would have been challenging, but Noooooooooooo. A big glorious, "put the dagger in my chest" honorable death to show B'Elanna really HAS changed is preferable. Like she's not going to be psychologically f'd for the rest of her life over that. Like her little self-examining quesiton of whether she just made the biggest mistake of her life is going to END there, with one single moment of contemplation. It's going to plague her the rest of her life. Ugh.

Ok, now that I'm off that. Andropov just forgetting his hatred for Baines after he finds out that Allyson was a hologram all along. LAME. UNREALISTIC! It's HATRED! It BURNS in you! he watched a girl he loved DIE and then POOF she was back to life and Baines jovially informed him she'd been a hologram all along and that he'd just made him get attached to her and watch her suffer just to 'understand the plight of holograms'. I don't give a damn, I'd f*** that sombitch up. Ya know, like people's hatred just evaporates at a moment's notice. That's not the true nature of people. Hatred, desire for vengeance, they fester, and linger. Such BS.

The one thing I'm ok with is Montgomery pardoning all of them after the whole matter. It was pretty obvious that they were totally right and he was totally wrong the whole time and they tried to convince him of the fact like 500 times through official, legit channels and methods, and he just acted like a complete d-bag. So, I think he realized it, and made the effort not to be a total d-bag and prosecute them. Definitely the smart move. And I could see it happening... he'd have to be QUITE the d-bag to go ahead and court martial them all. Plus it would come out how much of an idiot and how wrong he'd been, so, naturally, everyone's better off that way. Hah, kind of like the end of 24.

I really liked how the little girl turned out to be Covington. I honestly did not see that one coming, and the whole time I was trying to figure out who it could have been. I was thinking Libby maybe, but then I realized she never went to the Academy. I thought at the very FIRST it was 7 of 9 but then I was like no, her father didn't seem like an abuser, and then the child got older which would have been beyond the point that Seven got assimilated, so that was out.

I thought it was interesting the way they introduced this Dr. Kaz as the new CMO after the EMH's departure because I remembered reading that in the Voyager relaunch they had a new Trill doctor and I remembered thinking, "Man that's stupid." But now having gotten to get used to the character, I think I liked him. Still no Julian Bashir

You know, one thing I find interesting is that I suspect the author might see herself as Libby, or LIKE Libby's character. I didn't honestly see a whole lot of background to how/why Libby got accepted as a field agent in Starfleet Intelligence, to be honest. Her whole "I can get people to talk openly and trust me" thing is a little trumped up. That's all well and good, but a lot of people can do that, not all those people are fit to be covert agents for intelligence agencies. I think things like computer skills, martial skills/background, language ability, ONE of those, would be necessary. She felt like a forced-character when it came to her qualifications, and authors generally don't know enough about a specialized area of military culture like intelligence work. Unless it's someone like Tom Clancy and it's specifically FOR that genre. But yeah.
I thoroughly enjoyed the 7 of 9, and Icheb interactions. I think their alienation was very realistic. And I liked Irene Hanson and how 7 took to her, quite a bit. I think 7 would be dying to find some kind of family to connect to, especially after turning away Chakotay. I was a little irritated by the fact that all these half-baked chemistries were kind of flying around. I kept wondering, are they going to re-cook the Chakotay-Janeway thing now? Is there Janeway-Kaz chemistry? Is there Seven-Kaz chemistry? Are Chakotay and Seven going to get back together?

I suppose the irritating aspect was that it was never actually addressed in the end. Of course, there were hints galore dropped about Janeway being interested in Chakotay still. That was kind of interesting. I suppose, if Christie Golden is a J/C fan, that may be why she wrote Janeway with little-to-NO problem whatsoever being like sisters with Mark's new wife. I think she should have taken Mark to meet Michael Sullivan . Bein like, "yeah, I replaced you. And he doesn't even need batteries"

Ah! AND DATA! Data was fuckin awesome. Data warrants the whole word, cuz he was... fuckin awesome. I love how Picard and Data are like the famous old guys now, like Kirk and Spock. Of course, you notice, I didn't say Picard and Riker . There is absolutely nothing NOT cool about Picard and Data .
