OK first of all, I do not consider, beating anyone to be acceptable behavior. Second of all, bruises and the like are not legally considered torture, coersion is the technical term, and its acceptable in certain situations from a legal standpoint. Something that I don't agree with but cest la vie. Third jT specified alien torture devices, (more than hands and feet) so getting beat up doesn't seem to count for her inquiry.

Re: Status and Support
I know Archer is suppposed to be the Hero of Enterprise.
But he could get the Crap beat out of him and five minutes later be ready for round two.
Trip gets ligthly tagged and he is down fo rthe count. In the Andorina incident he hits an Andorian and nothing. then gets hit by the Andorian and that is it he is out of the episode.
In Precious Cargo he hits the Kidnapper with three good set up lefts and a hard right. Nothing. The Kidnapper doesn't evn blink. Hits Trip and ddown goes Trip. Kidnapper jumps on him and is going to drown him when the Princess runs up and tags the Kidnapper with a Tree limb. Down goes the Kidnapper. Trip was always made out to be a weakling except when he beat Kelby in Bound.
Archer could get the Hell beat out of him and he bounced right back. Looking at both men they seemed to be about the same build and stamina. Archer is supposed to be some 14 years lder than Trip. Yet it is Archer who has to drag Trip's Ass across the Desert.

Actually Silverbullet and I are coauthoring a story. No more information till the story's posted. It's a surprise.

I'm donating my body to science fiction.

I was mostly just musing on the peculiarity of American TV in this matter. However, I'd really like to know just where leaving bruises on people is legal. Lying to try to fool people into confessing is legal -- but assaults that leave bruising on a prisoner who has not resisted??? Really? (Of course, that doesn't mean some police won't lie and say someone resisted when he didn't.)
Certainly in cases involving children, bruises without an obvious innocent explanation are considered serious evidence of abuse, requiring reporting and investigation. (The worst perpetrators in youth facilities trade tips on how to avoid leaving bruises so they won't get caught and fired.)
SB, you really seem to really be offended that Trip didn't bounce back like Captain America when somebody hauled off on him. I'm more offended that Archer usually did. However, Trip had knock-down drag out fights he won, too, like with the Arkonian. If you ask me, this sort of thing basically exists at the convenience of the writers without much regard for realistic consequences. It's one of those tropes.
But I think Kirk probably wins the award for ridiculous number of knock-down-drag-out hand-to-hand combat victories.

Well yes. I continue to write. And on Fanfiction.Net, for those who want, it is possible to cast a glance at my latest efforts. We arrived to
The Ears of the Elves, chapter Forty-four
And here is the beginning of the whole story.

But, I must say, you could also find something else on Fanfiction.net written by me. If you want.

Kirk wins in all the categories of ridiculous plot twist on Star Trek.

Re: Status and Support
That's for sure. He also wins for:
Using nonsequitors to make computers and androids blow themselves up
Kissing alien babes until they melt into a puddle and help you
Bringing two warring sides together with one stirring speech that changes them forever
Brilliantly staving off certain defeat from superior forces
Fooling Vulcan matriarchs at their own game (or was that McCoy?)
Inspiring undying loyalty in a corps of red-shirted crewmen even though they are destined for certain death
Anything else?

Re: Status and Support
Kirk didn't have the prime directive, did he? I thought that a TNG innovation.

Re: Status and Support
Yes he did. I remember wondering why they ever bothered to mention there was one because Kirk never followed it. He seemed instead to go out of his way to interfere.
From Wikipedia:
The Prime Directive is explicitly defined in the Original Series episode "Bread and Circuses", which is set in 2267 as :
"No identification of self or mission. No interference with the social development of said planet. No references to space or the fact that there are other worlds or civilizations."

Re: Status and Support
Huh! I'd forgotten that completely. Yeah, he did totally ignore it.
I guess "A Piece of the Action" and "Patterns of Force" do play off the idea of the dangers of messing up other civilizations, though.

The PD is actually referenced in "Patterns of Force" when John Gill (the historian who was the "Fuhrer" on Ekos) told Kirk that he (Gill) was wrong to violate the Directive.
Not that I did any research into that episode or anything...
