Allergic to heat, rocks and cactus? Hmmm. Guess you'd have to move to Antarctica, then. ;-)

I am allergic to pollen and I can't move to Antarctica! I wake up every morning with irritated eyes and I sneeze a lot. We have nice hot weather for days, sometimes at bit too hot (also in my appartment), but luckily at the office we have airco.

I couldn't bear the thought of Arizona either, SB. I hate deserts. And heat.

It truly might be a little easier on your bones and joints, though.

As I understand it. Arizona is supposed to be good for people with resperatary conditions. that was once. With the advent of Air conditioning there are new Resperatory problems.

I don't know how people put up with this place before Air conditoning.

Everything is brown. Dirt and Sagebrush. There once must have been a Hell of a lot of water around her about 10 million years ago because there are so many water channels cut into the earth.

We do have a problem: we have a state flower, state bird, state tie (Bolo) probably a state worm. But not state motto. Been searching for one. Most popular candidate is "Send Money" Or "Stay home but send Money"

Thanks for the reminders. You made me think to call my grandmother (husband's grandmother) in Philadelphia to see how she's doing. Yes, she has airconditioning, but, no, she won't turn it on. "That just air feels different than normal air. I'm nice and comfortable with my fan." I'm actually sympathetic. I also hate airconditioning and do very well with heat. AT 85 degrees, I start to feel comfortable and I'm still OK up till about 100 degrees. I love Texas and I love Arizona, except for the airconditioing.

Glad to hear she's okay. As I posted in the upsetting news thread, one of my elderly neighbors died from heat related causes last night.

Today was far cooler than yesterday - with a high only of 91. But that's still very hot. But people are out in force in this neighborhood checking on the elderly still and making sure animals have shade and water. It's still supposed to be pretty hot for the next few days. I was out around 7:30pm and it felt so cool - and the temp was 88.

You know it's summer when its that time right before the sun's risen but it's pretty light out - not dawn, but pre-dawn, maybe? - and it's 77 degrees and muggier than anything...

Went to the park with the dog today in 97 degree weather. The poor little thing drank half his body weight in water while we were out. Halfway back home he just sat down and made me carry him the rest of the way. Fortunately he only weighs about three pounds. It's pretty bad when the dog poops out from the heat. Of course, he is an indoor dog.

Oh no. :-(

Heat's something I can deal with - I grew up in Houston. It's anywhere from 100 to 113 degrees in August and 90+% humidity, so everything is air-conditioned to within an inch of its life. It's like living inside a sauna and the only way to deal with it is to remember that it's equivalent to the worst of winter in northern climates. In other words, you take precautions, stay inside inside most of the time and look out for pets, the young, the elderly and the homeless until it passes. In winter climates you might have to scrape ice off the windshield and warm up the engine. Here you have to open all the windows and let the heat out of the car before you get in and attempt to touch the hot steering wheel.

[I had a pen pal from Scandinavia visit me once in the middle of August. He thought I was exaggerating about the heat and humidity until he stepped out of the airport tunnel right into the parking lot. It hits you just like it does when you open an oven door, with a wave of heat that feels like a solid thing. His eyes just got wide. :-) I've had a similar reaction to cold temperatures, the lowest I've experienced being 7 degrees. I can't imagine what it would be like to live with temperatures that are 'minus' anything!]

I guess it makes sense then that, like most folks here have mentioned their discomfort with air conditioning, I'm uncomfortable with central heating! I so rarely have to use it here that I'm just not used to it (and it's probably blowing collected pollen or dust or something at me.) When I do have to use it (usually a week or so in December and January and through most of February) it leaves me with a headache, chapped lips and a tender nose. :-/ On the other hand, I get all excited if it's cold enough to have a fire in the fireplace. That's just neat. :-)

All of that really makes me sympathetic with poor Shran who once mentioned have visited a planet where the temperature was just slightly below the boiling point of water. And for Archer! Twenty eight below in the middle of summer on Andoria? Yikes.

I spent some time in Aruba as a child - and it is blistering hot equatorial sun. If you ever visit on vacation, bring sunscreen and lots of it. The only thing that makes it livable at all are the constant trade winds.

We had air conditioning, which made it survivable. But before a/c - they developed a house design that harnessed the idea the heat rises to keep the interior cool. The houses also were ventilated in such a way to capture the winds.

http://www.fodors.com/world/caribbean/a ... 30004.html

I've read about new designs in passive houses - houses that have walls so think and are so well-insulated and ventilated - that they don't require artificial heating or cooling no matter the climate. I don't precisely understand how it works - but it's definitely being worked on as part of the green building movement. And passive houses would have an upside to those who hate artificial heat or cooling.

Age can be a factor too. when aa lot younger I was stationed in sub-tropical and tropical countries. Heat did't bother me. Also was stationed in the Artic when in my 20's. cold didn't bother me. Now Heat and bitter cold really get to me.

I don't know WHAT Illinois' state motto but it should be something about ex-governors going to prison.
3 governors in the past 35 years went to prison. Rod Blagojovich is on trial now. :banghead:
Stupid state.
My allergies suck. I am being treated for a sinus infection again, and am now trying Omnaris and Astepro. I'm allergic to dust mites and mold. I need to visit Arizona to see if I'd feel better there.
