mitchell..
go and find an attorney that has a lot of dealing in ag law.
they should be able to advise you in the best approach.
do keep in mind from what i have read the taxation will depend on your intent ie that you do intend to keep on farming it and can demostrate this by all that you have put into it.

for that matter you might be able to claim some of the land for compensation for all you have put into it.
but once again check local laws.

this is from a pennsylvania newspaper..

inheritance-tax relief for farm families. It exempts half the value of farms that have agricultural easement.
.

Pennsylvania's inheritance tax rate is 4.5 percent for the deceased's children, grandchildren or parents; 12 percent for siblings and 15 percent for other heirs. Spouses and charitable organizations are not charged inheritance

if say you have kids but they are not interested in farming you might want to explore putting some of the land in charitable trust even a land perserve type thing that will still allow you to farm it .
this might give you a legit tax break.

this might be of interest..

*I'd* get them to write you a gift letter for, like, $150,000 cash. THEN use THAT money to "buy" their farm "properly" from them for $150,000, though you're using their money, so really, they'd actually be giving the farm to you when all is said and done, but the transactions all look good to the officials.

Priso and I were renting had no money and some debts, so we got his parents to gift-letter us $20,000 and we paid our debts with this and also put a little cash wad in our account.

Then we went to the bank, debt-free, and got a 0-down-payment mortgage. Then we moved into our new house, without having paid $1 yet, and we put $10,000 back on our line of credit and gave that plus the $10,000 sitting in our account back to the 'rents. Then we started paying $1500/mo mortgage payments instead of the rent we'd been paying.

AAaaand we had a house!

Then we SOLD the house less than three years later for quite a wee bit more than we bought it. We certainly didn't have to put $0 down on this new house we just bought. What a leg-up into the real estate market!

$0-down-payment mortgages are SUCH an awesome option if you have no savings....rather than staying away from real estate for years while you slowly save. Esp. if you happen to live in a real-estate hotspot.

Gift letters can be a crafty tax-free way to do stuff. If it's allowed in your state.

Smile Thanks everyone, for the suggestions an stuff. Laughing Oddly enough my parents, or atleast my Mom seems more ticked off about this then I am. (which is kinda hard to beleave.)

My parents will ofcourse eventualy be seeing a Ag lawyer to figure the estate issues, an at the same time learning the Best legal way to hand it over to me, with out givin the Government one more damn penny then they truely deserve. No doubt Ill either be "dragged along" Cool, Or ofcourse be kept fully informed if for some reason I cant sit in.

Cool After all that gets sorted out,, then theirs the fun part of dealin with my Sibs. Cool My Mom is worried some how, that my sibs could cause trouble. Im not all that scared, since both my Sisters have assured me they would never do anything to Hurt the farm, or my wish to continue on the Farm. My Younger Brother Just dosnt seem to care bout anything. Confused He's the confusing one. As in No one has a clue what he wants to do, since he's never serious when asked about the future an what he wants for it.

While I have no doubt we'll eventualy get this all sorted out for the best. Confused It still just pisses me off that the Government has to tax the snot out of those that inherent Farms. Why try an cause more troubles for those that provide the food for this nation? I swear sometimes the US government seems so self distructive at times. Confused Rolling Eyes either that or completely lackin in any common sence.

what do you mean "provide the food for the nation"

the grocery store invents the food by itself, doesn't it?

like nectarines and things? they magically appear in those big wood bins on the left side of the store, don't they? right?

I just realized that Trek replicators, would they ever get invented, would be the death of most farming on Earth! Shock

^ Not necessarily....

You will have "green" people like me that like to grow there own herbs and veggies, OR that like to support LOCAL farmers.

^ Well, I said most farming. Of course there would be people who'd want to experience the genuine article. But all in all, in the (24th century) Trekverse, large-scale farming would be a thing of the past.

I ended up not going to the last day of Shoreleave because I just am not feeling very well.

I BETTER be better by friday! I am NOT going to miss seeing everyone and Conner!!!

Wink What was it Trip said in that season 1 episode,,, "Everything gets recycled"..
Seriously whos gona be willing to Eat Resequenced Proteins/meals, when they had just been converted from something you just flushed down the hopper not 5 minutes before. Laughing

Cool Besides, the creator of the replicator, an his prototype would more then likely dissapear off the face of the Earth if such a device was ever created. Cool

An in all seriousness, their is no shortage of food, or productive Crop land (yet- keep the developments from growing out instead of up, an we should be fine for a long time yet.). The problem is those pesky middle men between the growwers/farmers, an those who need the food.

No kidding. I think of that orphanage in Iraq, where those kids were naked and starving while supplies were bulging off the shelves just down the hall. The administrators were selling the supplies on the black market. Same kind of thing is happening in Africa I hear, and everywhere else in the third world where there is famine. The dictator take the aid money and put in in their pockets while the people die.

Whine of the day: that lady in my room just wouldn't stop talking!! And for some reason the person she likes to talk to the most has to be me!! Confused Confused Confused GAH!!! It's like she's trying to "mother" me or something, well and the crazy thing is she keeps telling me like how I need to have some time alone, some peace and quiet with no one bothering me etc, like DUH, like especially try to picture this crazy (yet real events!! Confused ) situation, I'm like totally exhausted and sleep deprived and I'm just about to go to bed take a nap, then she sees me and starts TALKING to me for like 3 frelling hours (no kidding) about how I should better go to sleep because I work hard, and how I need peace and quiet and time alone without people bugging me all the time. For 3 hours. AND I JUST WANNA GO TO MY BED AND PASS OUT!!!! Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused

Well and she really thinks I gotta be like her in everything for some reason, like she tells me I should go take a walk on the beach it's really relaxing and I need peace and quiet, I should just like sit on the pier and watch the boats or whatever Confused well but I don't like being in the sun, and like seriously I've got better stuff to do than watching boats I need my piece and quiet where I can actually use it because otherwise what the frell is it good for. I mean I can't even read my book like somewhere outside all alone on the pier or whatever, I need my computer to read my book. And she just doesn't get it that I don't enjoy the same stuff she does. Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused

I fixed the internet connection on my side of the building. It was that stupid J.O. he broke it, like he tried to plug in a cord that didn't fit then it got like all jammed and stuff, then he tried to release it really aggressively and he broke it. So I just fixed it today myself because the manager and the actual maintenance people who have actual tools don't even care, so I had to do it myself. With my Swiss army knife. Laughing Now you see how I got the nickname "MacGyver" Laughing
