Not a very scientific thing, but hillarious as it can get. I present the austrian village

Fucking.

It's pronounced differently than the rather unflattering english word, but that doesn't keep the natives from using that fact. They market a beer called "Fucking Hell" (Hell is a german term for lager)

Some of these people haven't taken their medication. Let's see what happens now...

It's actually not that crazy. Scientists study cat's claws to help develop better hypodermic needles. Perhaps the way a cat laps water will help develop something useful.

So far I've only got a German link. Hope to find an english one, too. Scientists at the CERN in Switzerland

have stored antimatter for the first time

Looks like Trip's job is starting to become a reality :D

I think that's Trip and Scotty in the illustration. But only very vaugely so no one gets sued for copyright infringement.

As for Scotty, OK. But I believe the other to be that Enterprise captain on the first movie.

Very cool slideshow of the brain. I would happily hang a few of these as art: http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2010/1 ... brain.html

There was a documentary on Swedish TV about the ten most threatening things that could happen to mankind. From lowest to highest, they were:

10. Collapsing star
9. Deadly impact
8. Supervolcanic eruption
7. Hostile extraterrestrials
6. Natural pandemic
5. Physics experiments
4. Climate catastrophe
3. Doomsday war
2. Machine superintelligence
1. Synthetic biology

Frankly, I thought the whole thing too far fetched, like taken from a slew of sci-fi movies.

I mean, "hostile extraterrestrials". Sure, I subscribe to the camp that doesn't think we should presume that ETs are friendly, but I think we'd be hit by stray comets, asteroids or black holes before they would arrive. And "physics experiments", like the LHC, are just like a nutty conspiracy theory. And the less said about "climate catastrophe" (the man-made kind) the better.

Also, "doomsday war" is now a rather remote possibility after the end of the cold war. Say what you want about the islamo-fascists, but they won't be able to turn the world into a nuclear wasteland. And I've always been sceptical of the possibility of real artificial intelligence.
