Linda wrote:Kotik, with your flying experience, I think you should write a story about propeller airplane flying on Vulcan. How would the thinner atmosphere and heavier gravity effect the design of gasoline powered propeller airplanes? Would they even have them at some point in their history of flight on Vulcan? How would the flying techniques be different? Should I make this a story challenge to you? :vulcan: 8)

Well, there's one problem with propeller planes and that is the density of the atmosphere. Piston engined airplaines usually do not fly higher than 12.000 feet, because they aren't pressurized, while rare examples like the Cessna C414 reach up to 20.000 feet. Turboprop planes are usually limited to 25.000 feet, may be some more, but no much, because the thinner the air gets, the higher gets an airplane's stall speed (the speed at which the airflow over the wings isn't enough to keep it flying), the higher you get, the smaller becomes the margin between stall speed and the planes maximum speed.

I would venture a guess that a propeller plane could fly on Vulcan, but not very high and it would be extremely dangerous.

[EDIT]
I just noticed I didn't answer some of your questions. Basically, if Vulcans had airplanes at one point, to make them function they would have to be significantly faster than Earth planes, due to the thinner atmosphere - at least if they followed the same principles as flight on Earth.

Double post, but what the heck ;)

I'll take Linda's proposed challenge and write a story with a propeller plane on Vulcan

It is freaking snowing here. As far as I was aware, there was nothing in the news about even a chance of it snowing. But, no, I just happened to look outside five minutes ago and big, fat, white flakes were falling from the sky. And it's only getting harder, the snowfall. This is just wyrd. It never snows here until Februrary, if it snows at all. Wow. I'm like in shock.

Where are you?

My dad emailed to ask if we were snowed in, but the sky is clear blue.

It feels like just a few months ago I was announcing that my oldest boy got accepted into college. That same boy J. just called, thrilled that he's been accepted into graduate school for physical therapy. He's coming back to Pittsburgh!!!! but will be looking for his own place. YES!!! I am so pleased that he succeeded in doing what he set out to do. I am so pleased he's coming back to Pittsburgh, where it's safer. This boy really went all out for college, working harder than he did in high school.

Also, one of my twins, C. got an internship for the summer at an accounting firm downtown. I am so proud. Looks like they will do better than me careerwise *fingers crossed, knock on wood*. :D
I'm donating my body to science fiction.

The litteral H in nowhere. Ie, if you pulled up North Carolina on the map and found the exact centre of the state, that's more or less where I am. Do to wyrd topography, about half the county sits on excellent potter's clay and the rest on sand that nothing but longleaf pines and azaleas will grow in and, for some reason that's never exactly been explained to me but has something to do with the various heat capacities and whatnot, we tend to have bizzaro weather. The year I was at UNC Chapel Hill, it snowed on Halloween, was warm enough for shorts at Xmas, and gave us one of the worst snows we've ever had that Valentine's Day. But that's just North Carolina. Or global warming. Or both.

On that note, it stopped snowing about 20 min after it started and it's all melted by now. Though I think this proves my holly-berries-indicate-winter-weather point fairly well, hmm?

And congrats jT!

Yes, congrats JT.

NC was where we used to drive to experience actual seasons when we lived in Florida, usually in Asheville (not your part of NC). Once we went up there for Thanksgiving and experienced way more season than we were prepared for. That little cabin was horribly, horribly cold.

I got my Nürburgring "Jahreskarte" today :happyjump: :happyjump: That utterly German term means a ticket, entiteling me to drive any car on the famed Nürburgring Northern Loop, a massive race track in Germany with a lap length of 12.9 miles and 120 corners  The ticket, although hideously expensive at 800 euros, covers the whole of 2011 :happyjump: :happyjump:

For people not familiar with the Nürburgring - that's what it looks like if driven properly :

Westfield Megabusa @Nordschleife

PS: The video is somewhat lengthy, but it shows a SINGLE lap of this mammoth racetrack :D

Dear, I've been riding the ring for years. While there is a very realistic chance of getting oneself killed for those who overestimate their skills, if you know your limits, you'll do just fine. A friend of mine [TRIP]having a bachelor in Engineering[/Trip] and me even built our own dedicated "ring toy", an East German Trabant car with the same Suzuki Hayabusa engine as the car in the video. We know how agressive we can drive without having an armco imprint on our faces  Don't worry, Kotik's not gonna stuff his toy into the armco :)
