Yes, unfortunately, which is probably why we find the concept so fascinating.
Reminds me of that book The Sociopath Next Door, which was very interesting except that it made me see sociopaths EVERYWHERE for awhile. Still, you might as well realize that's a possibility -- and often with the people who seem most charming. It was particularly chilling to hear that they are often teachers, priests, and counselors -- all positions in which people can exercise their evil on others without much oversight. It's no accident this guy chose to be a school bus driver.
We had a couple in our town arrested for trying to import a sex slave from Asia. (Ye Gods!) You just never know.

The abuse dynamic can be very complicated. The women are traumatized daily and eventually likely lose a sense of self. They probably all have ptsd. 
It's also very true that abusers often put themselves in a position of power, making it easy to abuse and prey on the vulnerable. Pedophiles very often work around children, for instance. Frightening and sad...

Makes sense to me. It was a day to celebrate in his eyes. I'm sure that the girls were his most valued possessions.
